'An Act Of War': Putin Ally Blasts Donald Trump Over Russian Oil Sanctions
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin meet in Alaska in August.Donald Trump’s decision to impose sanctions on two of Russia’s biggest oil companies is “an act of war”, a key Vladimir Putin ally has declared.Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia, hit out after Trump made the shock announcement on Wednesday night.“Today is a very big day in terms of what we’re doing,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “Look, these are tremendous sanctions. These are very big.”The move makes it harder for the two companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, to sell oil to other countries, dealing a huge blow to the Russian economy. The move came a day after Trump scrapped plans for another peace summit with Putin aimed at agreeing a deal to end the Ukraine war.Russia has rejected Trump’s proposal of ending the war on the current battle lines, as Putin wants Kyiv to agree to hand over the parts of the Donbas region that it has been unable to occupy since the conflict began in 2022.Writing on Telegram, Medvedev said: “The US is our enemy, and their talkative ‘peacemaker’ has now fully embarked on the warpath with Russia.“They will, of course, say he couldn’t help but be pressured in Congress, etc. This doesn’t change the main point: the decisions taken are an act of war against Russia. And now Trump has fully aligned himself with insane Europe.”Even my Trump’s standards, his position on the Ukraine war has swung from one extreme to the other in recent weeks. In a major U-turn a month ago, he said Ukraine could win back all of the land it has lost since the war began and said Russia was a “paper tiger”.Earlier this month, Trump hinted that he could sell Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles, which would allow it to attack deep inti Russian territory. But he ditched that idea after holding a “productive” telephone call with Putin.A subsequent meeting in the White House with Volodymyr Zelenskyy was an ill-tempered affair, with Trump urging Ukraine to hand over territory to Russia or face being “destroyed”.That led to fresh accusations that the US president had been “played” once again by Putin. However, Trump’s oil sanctions announcement suggests he has now run out of patience with the Russian president as his hopes of brokering a deal to end the Ukraine war fade.Related...Trump’s Flip-Flopping Putin Policy Flips Again With New Russia SanctionsBBC Russia Expert Delivers Reality Check To Trump After Putin Talks ScrappedTrump Told Zelenskyy To Hand Over Ukraine Territory Or Be 'Destroyed' By Russia
