Angela Rayner Appears To Have Echoed One Of Nigel Farage's Most Alarming Claims
Angela Rayner and Nigel FarageAngela Rayner appears to agree with Nigel Farage’s claims that immigration is one of the primary causes of disorder in the UK.Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Southport riots, the deputy prime minister updated today’s cabinet meeting about her work on improving social cohesion in British society.According to No.10′s read-out of the meeting, Rayner listed a variety of factors she believes are to blame for straining the “social fabric, trust and integration” in communities around the UK – including immigration. Her remarks come after violent protests in Epping sprung up outside a local hotel believed to be housing asylum seekers last week. They’re not dissimilar to Reform UK leader Farage’s warnings in June after a period of unrest in Northern Ireland triggered by the arrest of two Romanian teenagers accused of attempted rape. The Reform UK leader said: “The truth of it is that immigration only works if you have integration with it. If you don’t, you have a divide.“And where human beings are divided, history teaches us, you get conflict. I am very, very deeply worried about what’s happening.”Farage had a similar message on Monday, claiming the Epping demonstrations suggested the UK was on the cusp of “civil disobedience” over the high number of asylum seekers. But unlike her Reform rival, Rayner – who is also the communities secretary – suggested it was not just the impact of immigration that was driving the unrest. She told her cabinet colleagues that “economic insecurity, the rapid pace of de-industrialisation, immigration and the impacts on local communities and public services, technological change and the amount of time people were spending alone online, and declining trust in institutions are having a profound impact on society”.The deputy PM also pointed out that 17 of the 18 areas where there was a high rate of disorder last summer were among the most deprived places in the country. She told cabinet: “While Britain was a successful multi-ethnic, multi-faith country, the government had to show it had a plan to address people’s concerns and provide opportunities for everyone to flourish.”Rayner pointed to Labour’s upcoming Plan for Neighbourhoods, meant to deliver billions of pounds of investments over a decade to the most deprived areas.Asked if this meant Rayner saw a connection between high levels of immigration and the disorder, the prime minister’s spokesperson said: “She sees a link between concerns people have about where the government is acting on their behalf and on their interests with a range of factors.”Journalists also asked whether Keir Starmer was concerned there would be a repeat of last year’s riots. The spokesperson said: “He’s focused on taking action to ensure we address people’s concerns, people’s legitimate concerns, that we start by ensuring these concerns are legitimate and then you deal with the underlying causes of those concerns. That includes having a strong police presence and responding to criminal behaviour wherever it is.”Net migration – the difference between those who emigrate away from the UK and those who arrive – to the UK almost halved in 2024, down to 431,000 compared to 860,000 the previous year. However, Starmer’s pledge to “smash the gangs” and bring down small boat crossings across the Channel has failed so far.The number of migrants arriving in the UK from across the English Channel increased by 48% for the first six months of this year compared to the first six months of 2024, according to the Home Office figures. The Conservatives claimed this proved the Labour government had “broken a new national record – for failure”.Related...Yvette Cooper Delivers Brutal Commons Slapdown To Chris Philp Over The Tories' Immigration Failures'A Horrific Moral Failure': Campaigner Slams Labour And Tories Over Illegal ImmigrationKeir Starmer's Immigration Plan Shows UK Is 'In A Very Dark Place', Says Albanian PM
