BBC Expert Warns Trump's New Peace Plan With Russia Would Allow Putin To Declare 'Victory'
Russian president Vladimir Putin and US president Donald Trump have allegedly come up with their own plan to end the war in UkraineA BBC expert has warned that Donald Trump’s alleged new peace plan with Russia would allow Vladimir Putin to declare “victory” in his war against Ukraine.Outlets including Axios, Reuters and the Financial Times have reported that Trump and Russia have drawn up a plan declaring that Ukraine should give up land and weapons, while also taking a cut to its military. If accurate, this would be crossing a major red line for Ukraine, as Kyiv has refused to willingly give up any land to Putin since the war began. The BBC’s Russia editor Steve Rosenberg told Radio 4′s Today programme: “The Ukrainians would be right to see this as a capitulation to Russian demands.“And I think Putin would be able to present this quite credibly as a victory, if it were to go ahead.”The US president has been trying to bring the deadly war to a close ever since he returned to office in January.Trump has repeatedly offered Moscow favourable terms for peace, even rolling out the red carpet for Vladimir Putin in a rare face-to-face summit in Alaska earlier this year. But the Russian leader has repeatedly refused to agree to any deal. After a brief period of trying to pressure Moscow with sanctions, these reports suggest Trump is now trying to force Ukraine to compromise instead, almost four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.Former US ambassador to Ukraine, William B Taylor, also told Today: “A lopsided agreement would not end the war.”“They don’t give peace prizes for appeasement,” he said, alluding to Trump’s hopes to win the Nobel Peace Prize. “Appeasement is never a peace plan.”The US military has confirmed that senior Pentagon officials have arrived in Ukraine to discuss “efforts to end the war” with Russia.US Army secretary Dan Driscoll and US Army’s chief of army Gen Randy George are expected to meet Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Thursday. They will be joined by US army commander in Europe Gen Chris Donahue and Srg Maj of the Army Michael Weimer. This US team also met with Ukrainian defence minister Denys Shmyhal on Wednesday. He wrote on X that they “focused on the next steps for implementing the historic defence agreements reached by President Zelenskyy and President Trump”.An unnamed Ukrainian official told CBS: “Presidents Zelenskyy and Trump have already agreed to stop the conflict along the existing lines.”Meanwhile, Russia has rejected any calls for an immediate ceasefire on the frontline, and Putin’s top diplomat Sergei Lavrov has insisted that Russia still wants Ukraine to give up land, reduce its military and to become completely neutral. The Kremlin said there had been no developments on a possible peace plan since the Alaska summit in August.Special envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg, a keen advocate for Kyiv within the Trump administration, will also be leaving his role in January, the BBC reported.A White House official claimed the official thinks this would be the natural end to his role, which needs to be approved by the Senate after 360 days.Related...'He's Been Played By Putin Again': Top Diplomat Mocks Trump After Ukraine Peace Talks CollapseTrump Told Zelenskyy To Hand Over Ukraine Territory Or Be 'Destroyed' By RussiaBritain's Most Senior Army Officer Says Ukraine Cannot Defeat Russia
