Billie Piper: 9 Forgotten Roles The Doctor Who Star Once Played
Billie Piper at the premiere of her film Scoop last yearBillie Piper was the name on everyone’s lips this weekend, when she made a surprise appearance in the Doctor Who season finale.Originally known for her teen pop career here in the UK (bops like Because We Want To, Honey To The Bee, Walk Of Life and, crucially, Day And Night have really stood the test of time), Billie made the transition to acting in the mid-2000s when she joined the cast of the Doctor Who revival as a new companion, Rose Tyler. As Rose’s story evolved, the character eventually transformed into different entities like Bad Wolf and, in an appearance almost a decade later, The Moment. Meanwhile, Billie’s acting career saw her leading the salacious Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, the stress-inducing drama I Hate Suzie and, more recently, the hit Netflix film Scoop, which explored how Prince Andrew’s infamous Newsnight interview came to be.But there are plenty more notes on Billie’s acting CV that might have passed you by. Here are just nine of those roles that you might have completely forgotten…Evita (1996)OK, so we’re using the term “role” loosely here, but one of Billie’s first ever acting projects was as an extra in the screen musical Evita, featuring Madonna in the lead role, sharing a brief scene with future Oscar nominee Jonathan Pryce. Her debut single Because We Want To would be released just two years later, earning Billie her first of three number one singles. The Calcium KidA year before making her debut as Rose in Doctor Who, she made it clear she was prioritising acting over her singing career. In 2004, she starred alongside Orlando Bloom, Michael Peña and Rafe Spall in The Calcium Kid, a British comedy about a young milkman who sets his sights on becoming a boxer.Mansfield Park (2007)After stepping away from Doctor Who in 2006, one of Billie’s first projects was as the lead in Mansfield Park, playing Fanny Price in a TV movie based on the Jane Austen classic for ITV.Mansfield Park also featured EastEnders alum Michelle Ryan, James D’Arcy, Douglas Hodge, Hayley Atwell and Rory Kinnear. That same year, she’d cause a much bigger stir when she began playing Belle Du Jour in ITV’s cult series Secret Diary Of A Call Girl.A Passionate Woman (2010)Billie and British screen legend Sue Johnston shared the role of Betty in Kay Mellor’s miniseries A Passionate Woman, based on events from her own mother’s life.In the show, future White Lotus star Theo James played Billie’s love interest, with Joe Armstrong and Frances Barber also in the cast.True Love (2012)True Love was a short-lived, mostly improvised miniseries, with each instalment telling a different self-contained story set in Margate. In her episode, Billie played a school teacher who became infatuated with one of her students, played by Skins and The Gentlemen star Kaya Scodelario.Penny Dreadful (2014)Penny Dreadful was a horror series set in 19th century London, featuring a crossover of different characters from Gothic literature and an all-star cast that included everyone from Timothy Dalton, Rory Kinnear and the late Helen McCrory to Josh Hartnett, Jack Treadaway and Patti LuPone.Billie played Brona Croft, an Irish immigrant who later becomes the Bride of Frankenstein.Catherine Called Birdy (2022)In the past few years, notably since I Hate Suzie became recognised on both sides of the Atlantic, Billie’s acting roles have been a lot more international. One example came in 2022, when she appeared in Lena Dunham’s Catherine Called Birdy as the on-screen mum of The Last Of Us’ Bella Ramsey. Also in the cast of the medieval comedy were Andrew Scott, Sophie Okonedo and Joe Alwyn.Kaos (2024)Netflix’s Kaos reimagined classic stories from Greek mythology and put them in a high-budget modern setting, in a way comparable with Baz Luhrmann’s much-loved Romeo + Juliet.Billie played the prophet Cassandra, while the ensemble cast also included the likes of Jeff Goldblum, Aurora Perrineau, Nabhaan Rizwan and Leila Farzad, who previously starred with Billie in both seasons of I Hate Suzie. Will we ever forgive Netflix for pulling the plug on Kaos after just one season? Unlikely…Austin (2024)Billie Piper as herself in AustinAs well as Kaos, last year saw Billie playing herself in the Australian comedy-drama Austin.Led by former Love On The Spectrum participant Michael Theo, the project also featured fellow Brits Sally Phillips and Ben Miller.READ MORE:This Is Why Doctor Who Fans Aren't All Convinced That Billie Piper Is Really The New DoctorIt Turns Out A Very Different 90s Popstar Almost Landed Billie Piper's Doctor Who RoleBillie Piper Reveals How She Handles Ex-Husband Laurence Fox’s Controversial Comments
