Billie Piper Explains Why New Doctor Who Audio Adventure Had To Change Amid Return
Billie Piper in the Doctor Who season finaleBillie Piper has opened up about why Doctor Who is “completely different” to how it was 20 years ago.The Scoop actor shocked and delighted fans when she made an unexpected return to the franchise in last season’s finale, as Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor seemingly regenerated into a new incarnation played by Billie. The actor famously starred in the Whoniverse from 2005 as Rose Tyler, the companion to Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor.Following the surprise twist, fans are now speculating over whether the I Hate Suzie star will indeed be joining the show as the new Doctor.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Doctor Who (@bbcdoctorwho)However, in the meantime, it’s Billie and Christopher who will finally be reuniting in a new 12-part Doctor Who audio series titled The Ninth Doctor Adventures.Speaking specifically about that version of the beloved franchise, Billie explained why this project will feel different to the duo’s original adventures together.“If we just made the Doctor Who that we made 20 years ago now, it would feel slightly disingenuous,” she told Doctor Who Magazine, “because things were so different then, even 20 years ago, to what we’re experiencing, what we’ve seen, what we’ve been exposed to since.”“God, we were so much more positive then,” Billie went on. “People have been profoundly affected by the material they see on social media. And it’s been so normalised; everyone is a lot more heavy-hearted.”The Olivier Award winner concluded: “It’s not to say that we don’t have a capacity for joy, because I think we absolutely do, but to ignore where we are right now...it’s a completely different experience.”Christopher’s continued involvement in the franchise has been particularly pleasing to fans, after the Shallow Grave actor was vocal in the past about personal clashes with the show’s bosses while filming the 2005 revival of the beloved series. He went so far as to accuse the BBC of “blacklisting” him after he stepped down, and claimed that he’d threatened legal action against the corporation after they released a statement on his behalf about his exit without his consent. In 2023 he said that he’d only return if showrunner Russell T Davieswas not part of it. But fans were delighted when he announced his return after 15 years as part of the audio series.Elsewhere, Sex Education star Ncuti recently opened up about whether he was truly done with the show, having ended his tenure as the Time Lord after just two seasons.Related...Is Ncuti Gatwa Done With Doctor Who?
