Brits Are Increasingly In Favour Of Palestine Statehood. Here Are The Numbers To Prove It.
Protesters attend a pro Palestinian demonstration in London, Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023. Palestine Solidarity Campaign hosts march in support of Palestinians caught up in the war between Israel and Hamas. Brits support recognising a Palestinian state by a rate of almost three to one, a new poll has found.Researchers at Survation have found 49% of respondents are in favour of recognising Palestinian statehood, while 13% are opposed. It comes as prime minister Keir Starmer has recalled cabinet ministers from their summer recess to discuss a peace plan for Gaza today.Pressure is growing for the prime minister to formally recognise a Palestine state – part of Labour’s 2024 manifesto – after French president Emmanuel Macron announced his plans to officially do so in autumn and as fears of massstarvation in Gaza soar.US president Donald Trump, usually a keen ally to Benjamin Netanyahu, even signalled to Starmer on Monday that he would not object if the UK followed Macron’s lead. But, so far, Starmer has resisted. Ministers say it is a matter of “when not if” they will recognise Palestine, but have refused to put a timeline on it.Green entrepreneur and Labour party donor Dale Vince, who commissioned the poll, suggested this research shows the strength of support for a Palestinian state. He said: “The British public have spoken, and they want recognition of Palestine, and for trade sanctions against Israel.“The images of starvation, and the daily killings of innocent men, women, and children, have horrified the public, who want the suffering to end and for the government to show no fear in confronting Israel head on over its merciless warmongering.”The research also found 54% of Brits believe Israel’s actions have gone too far, while 5% disagree.Another 49% agreed the UK government should be more critical of Israel, compared to the 10% who thought the opposite.Survation found 38% said they oppose Israel’s action in Gaza, while 11% agree with its actions, and 52% of Brits believe Israel has breached international law with its campaign in Gaza, compared to 19% who disagree.A further 44% of respondents said the UK should suspend trade with Israel, compared to 29% said otherwise. The poll comes as more than 250 MPs have signed a letter calling for the UK to acknowledge a Palestinian state – piling yet more pressure on Starmer. But science secretary Peter Kyle told broadcasters this morning Palestinians should be “rewarded” with statehood recognition. He told Times Radio: “Palestine has representation by Hamas in Gaza. It has the Palestinian Authority on the West Bank. It is a complicated, difficult set of circumstances.“But no longer can we sit back and see what is happening in that region and think that the Palestinian people should not be rewarded for what they’ve been through and have the tools at their disposal to move them towards the kind of peace, stability and dignity that every citizen in every country is owed.”Responding to arguments that statehood would just reward Hamas, he said: “Citizens need to be rewarded for what they have been through and they need to be supported into the future to deliver the kind of peace and security and at the end to the horrors.”The British public have spoken, and they want recognition of Palestine and trade sanctions against Israel. They see Israel’s acts clearly for what they are - breaches of international law.
