Cabinet splits have burst into the open after allies of Keir Starmer accused health secretary Wes Streeting of plotting against him.Senior No.10 sources said the Labour leader would take on any challengers as concerns mount about his performance as prime minister.In particular, they accused Streeting of mounting a bid to unseat him, possibly in the wake of what promises to be a difficult Budget, with Rachel Reeves set to break Labour’s manifesto pledge not to put up income tax.One source told The Guardian: “Keir will not stand aside at this point, for Wes or anybody else.“We know everything is a bit febrile and everybody is concerned. But the consequences of a leadership challenge would be enormous and people need to remember that.″“f you chuck a leadership challenge in just 18 months into government you’d destabilise the markets, our allies and I don’t think the public would forgive us. The impact would be very serious. MPs need to think about the reality of what a challenge right now would mean.”A spokesperson for Streeting said: “These claims are categorically untrue. Wes’s focus has entirely been on cutting waiting lists for the first time in 15 years, recruiting 2,500 more GPs, and rebuilding the NHS that saved his life.”The anonymous briefing by No10 sources, which comes as Labour continues to trail in the polls, has now sparked a furious backlash.One government source said: “Number 10 has gone into full bunker mode, turning on their most loyal cabinet members for absolutely no reason.“Unfortunately there is a pattern of Keir’s team briefing against his own people- they did it to Angela Rayner, Lisa Nandy, Lucy Powell, now it’s Wes’s turn. A circular firing squad won’t help the government out of the hole we’re in.”A senior figure inside No.10 told HuffPost UK: “I think it has come from some supportive MPs who are frustrated by the last couple of weeks, but clearly given some fuel from No10. It all seems a bit silly to me.”A Labour MP accused Downing Street of “desperation” in an attempt to protect the PM, while another said: “They’ve been in the bunker since last year. This type of briefing is batshit for no fucking reason.”A veteran Labour figure said: “They are fucking mental – and useless.
