Can You Tell If A Fart Will Stink? Science Says Yes

EggsGood news for flatulent fitness lovers – it seems “fart walks” might have real benefits as we age by helping to manage our insulin. But that’s only one side of the gaseous exchange. What about the effects our toots might have on the people around us? Is there any way to tell if we’re dealing with an inoffensive parp or a foul, sulphuric stench bomb before it’s out?According to both AsapSCIENCE and clinical immunologist Dr Zachary Rubin, there might be. In a recent Instagram Reel, the doctor responded to another site user asking how you can “always tell” when a downstairs thunderstorm is set to bring its stinky wrath. “We’re talking about the physiology of flatulence,” he began. How can you “tell” what a fart will smell like?Dr Rubin starts by explaining the different sources of gas. First, there’s swallowed air, which doesn’t smell much. Then, there’s the by-product of carb-rich foods hitting your stomach (carbon dioxide), which can be more tolerable, though methane is sometimes made in the colon. But farts that come from the sulphur-containing compounds emitted by the fermentation of undigested or slowly-digested food, like fibre and protein-rich options, well... those stink. Like, rotten egg stink. “The term silent but deadly refers to the types of farts that eke out a little bit of gas, and it’s probably from that slow fermentation process,” the doctor shares. That means quieter, sneakier farts are likely to stink more.AsapSCIENCE agrees, sharing that “in the absence of other odourless gases” like air, sulphur is concentrated in stinkier flatulence that are “generally quiet because there is less volume.” Meanwhile, louder, more forceful flatulence can often be down to swallowed air; the least offensive member of the fart family.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Zachary Rubin, MD (@rubin_allergy)Does that mean loud farts never stink? No. Indigestion can lead to a “high volume fart that is loud and can be smelly,” Dr Rubin says (Alexa, play The Best Of Both Worlds). Meanwhile AsapSCIENCE says that loud farts can be just as foul as their sly brethren “if the sulfurcomponents are there.” In other words, while you might be a more informed tooter now, it’s still wise to fart responsibly.Related...'Fart Walks' May Be The Secret To Healthy Ageing, Doctor SaysI'm A GI Surgeon – Here's The Grim Reason We Don't Poop When We FartHere's How Many Times It's Normal To Fart In A Day
