Chancellor Takes Aim At Farage In Commons With Brutal 'Russian Asset' Barb

Chancellor Rachel Reeves poses on the doorstep of 11 Downing Street with her ministerial red box before heading to the House of Commons to deliver her Budget speech in London, Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2025.Rachel Reeves tore into the latest scandal surrounding Nigel Farage today while delivering her Budget.The chancellor compared the Reform UK leader to a “Russian asset” on Wednesday, alluding to ongoing fears about the party’s links to the Kremlin – which Farage and his team have robustly denied.It comes after Reform’s former leader in Wales, Nathan Gill, was sentenced to ten and a half years behind bars for spouting pro-Russian propaganda in the European parliament in his past role as an MEP.Though Reeves was primarily announcing the government’s tax and spending plans, she found time to take aim at Farage over the particularly sore subject.She began her attack by alluding to the Ukraine war and the UK’s ongoing support for Kyiv.“We are ramping up sanctions on Russia and we are freezing known Russian assets,” Reeves said, before adding with a smile: “But let me be clear, I don’t actually mean the Right Honourable Member for Clacton.”Even the government’s front bench behind Reeves looked surprised with that dig, and exchanged a small smile while backbenchers laughed.Labour urged Farage to hold a “forensic” independent investigation to root out any pro-Russian links within his party when Gill’s sentencing was announced last week.Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey also urged Starmer to investigate Russian influence in UK politics in the Commons on Wednesday.He said: “Given Reform won’t [launch an investigation], he must.“Will he now launch a national investigation into Russian infiltration into our politics?”The prime minister said he shared Davey’s shock over the Gill case, but stopped short of declaring a probe.He said: “You would think the leader of a political leader would want to get to the bottom of that, and ask the question, how on earth did that happen in the Reform Party, and what other links are there with Russia?“But no, the leader of Reform doesn’t want to do it because he doesn’t want to know the answer to the question because Reform is riddled with pro-Putin propaganda.”A Reform UK spokesman told HuffPost UK: “Mr Gill’s actions were reprehensible, treasonous and unforgivable.“We are glad that justice has been served and fully welcome the sentence Nathan Gill has received.”Rachel Reeves(Chancellor) thanks the covid corruption commissioner for chasing down nearly £400m of dodgy pandemic spending & contracts."Tory contracts handed out by Tory ministers to Tory peers & Tory friends.
