Charli XCX Fires Back At Glastonbury Performance Critics: 'Yawn'

Charli XCX on stage at Glastonbury on Saturday nightFor Charli XCX’s fans, her Glastonbury set served as a triumphant victory lap at the end of her exciting Brat era.On Saturday night, the Grammy winner closed the show on the Other Stage with a jam-packed set featuring hits from Brat, as well as other songs from over the course of her pop career. But while fans were impressed with Charli’s efforts (some even voiced their upset that she wasn’t allowed to headline on the Pyramid Stage), others were less taken with her performance, which intentionally made heavy use of AutoTune and did not feature a live band – or, for that matter, anyone else on stage but the British singer herself. The day after her performance, Charli took on some of her critics, writing on X: “The idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a ‘real artist’ is like, the most boring take ever. Yawn sorry just fell asleep…”like the idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a “real artist” is like, the most boring take ever. yawn sorry just fell asleep xx— Charli (@charli_xcx) June 29, 2025However, she then added that she was somewhat “enjoying the discourse”.“The best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of OK, easily understood and sort of forgettable,” she claimed.but to be honest… i enjoy the discourse. imo the best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of ok, easily understood and sort of forgettable.— Charli (@charli_xcx) June 29, 2025After reposting a five-star review of her set from The Guardian, Charli then noted she was “really enjoying these boomer vibe comments on my Glastonbury performance”.“It’s super fascinating to me,” she said.really enjoying these boomer vibe comments on my glastonbury performance. it’s super fascinating to me.— Charli (@charli_xcx) June 29, 2025Charli’s Glastonbury set began with her burning a flag emblazoned with her Brat album imagery, seemingly signifying the end of that era in her career.A message that flashed up on screens at the end of her performance read: “Thank you so much Glastonbury. So we burnt it down, does that mean Brat is finally over? Maybe it is. But probably not.“But we had to do it and it looked cool. I think you have all proven that Brat is forever. And honestly, I don’t know who I am if it’s over.”MORE GLASTONBURY:17 Must-See Moments From This Year's Glastonbury That You Might Have MissedBob Vylan Frontman Breaks Silence After Glastonbury Controversy Sparks Police InvestigationGlastonbury Organiser Says Those Who Don't Agree With Festival's Politics 'Can Go Elsewhere'
