Charlie Hunnam Hits Back At Claims That Monster Season 3 'Sensationalises' Ed Gein's Crimes
Charlie Hunnam at the premiere of Monster: The Ed Gein Story last weekCharlie Hunnam has addressed the controversy surrounding the latest season of Netflix’s Monster. The former Sons of Anarchy star takes the lead in the new series, which has held the top spot on Netflix’s most-watched chart since it began streaming last week. However, despite its popularity, like past seasons of Monster, The Ed Gein Story has also faced heavy criticism, with many accusing the show of sensationalising the horrific crimes of its central character. In an interview, Charlie – who plays the notorious serial killer Ed Gein in the show – took on this criticism during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.“If people are compelled to talk about it and think about it, hopefully they’ll actually be compelled to watch the show,” he said.“What I would hope and feel really confident in is that it was a very sincere exploration of the human condition and why this boy did what he did.”He insisted: “I never felt like we were sensationalising it. I never felt on set that we did anything gratuitous or for shock impact. It was all in order to try to tell this story as honestly as we could.”Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein in a promo image for the new season of MonsterBefore the series premiered, Charlie anticipated people might have negative feedback about it.Speaking to Variety, he said: “I could certainly see the accusation being levelled at me that I was too sensitive toward him, and let him off the hook a bit too much.“My hope was, although I clearly don’t understand the function of these type of stories, I understand that people are very drawn to them. I needed to bring Gein to life in as honest and human a way as possible.”Charlie did quite a bit of research in preparation for playing as Ed Gein, whose crimes inspired a slew of films including Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and The Silence Of The Lambs. He previously spoke to Variety about getting into character and specifically finding the right voice for his take on Gein.A fourth season of Monster is already in the works, with Charlie rumoured to be returning in a supporting role in the show’s next iteration.READ MORE:Thought The Stars Of Monster Season 3 Looked Familiar?
