Charlie Hunnam Reacts To Claims That Monster Season 3 Lets Serial Killer Ed Gein 'Off The Hook'
Charlie Hunnam at the premiere of Monster: The Ed Gein Story earlier this weekCharlie Hunnam has admitted he thinks the next season of Ryan Murphy’s true crime drama Monster could well be just as controversial as the first two.The Sons Of Anarchy actor takes the lead in the next season of Monster as the infamous serial killer Ed Gein, the murderer of two women who also desecrated the bodies of many others. While the first season of the Netflix anthology series faced controversy as many felt it focussed too much on Jeffrey Dahmer rather than his victims, effectively glorifying the serial killer, and the second about the Menéndez brothers was met with criticism for a slew of other reasons, Charlie admitted to Variety he thinks he could also be accused of letting Gein “off the hook a bit too much”.“You have to have an enormous amount of love and empathy for a character that you play to be able to inhabit them,” he told the US outlet.“Because as despicable as Ed was in his acts, I wanted to find the human in there.”Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein in a promo image for the new season of MonsterHe later added: “I could certainly see the accusation being leveled at me that I was too sensitive toward him, and let him off the hook a bit too much.“My hope was, although I clearly don’t understand the function of these type of stories, I understand that people are very drawn to them. I needed to bring Gein to life in as honest and human a way as possible.”Ed Gein’s crimes later came to inspire characters like Norman Bates in Psycho, “Leatherface” in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, “Buffalo Bill” in Silence Of The Lambs and even Dr. Oliver Thredson in another Ryan Murphy project, the Asylum season of American Horror Story. As well as the crimes of Ed Gein, the new season of Monster will also examine society’s obsession with true crime, with Psycho director Alfred Hitchcock and actor Anthony Perkins depicted as characters within the show.Monster: The Ed Gein Story premieres on Netflix on Friday 3 October, with a new season focussed around Lizzie Borden due to arrive next year.READ MORE:Menéndez Brothers Actors React To Controversy Surrounding 'Depiction Of Incest' In MonstersMonsters Creator Ryan Murphy Raises Eyebrows With Latest Comments About The Menéndez BrothersCooper Koch Answers Everyone's 1 Big Question About His Monsters Nude Scene
