Critics Are Saying This 'Breezy' New Netflix Comedy Is Your Next Binge-Watch
The Four Seasons is now streaming on NetflixNetflix’s new reimagining of The Four Seasons is now streaming – and if the early reviews are anything to go by, the platform may have another big hit on its hands.Based on the film of the same name, the four-part series stars Tina Fey (who also serves as its co-creator) alongside an impressive cast that includes Steve Carell, Will Forte and Colman Domingo. The show centres around a group of travel-loving, lifelong friends whose interwoven lives are turned upside down when one of the couples announces they’re getting a divorce. So far, critics have praised Tina Fey’s comedic writing (the Mean Girls and 30 Rock writer also penned several of the episodes) and the show’s overall tone which mixes cosy, low-stakes drama with a few uncomfortable moments.Meanwhile, some of the more critical reviews have called out the show for being a little slow and lacking in drama. Here’s a selection of what critics are saying about Netflix’s The Four Seasons… The Times (4/5) “The mix of Fey and her writing team’s combination of clever wordplay and broad comedy is performed as skilfully as you would expect from a cast this strong, but it is smart rather than smart-arsed. Friendship groups in real life can be annoying, exclusive and excluding, but this one welcomes you in and you might be surprised at how much you enjoy spending time with them.”The Independent (4/5) “As groups of midlife professionals go, this ensemble is terrifically entertaining. Netflix has taken the unvarnished joy of the film and added a slick coat of gloss.”The Guardian (4/5) “The Four Seasons is full of properly funny lines, rooted in properly middle-aged experience. In its comedy and its drama it captures the warm, weary affection for life and each other that only old friends and enduring couples really know. It understands that after a certain point, it’s not whether your other half ordered you the right sandwich from your favourite place, it’s that she did so at all.”Digital Spy (4/5) “It’s a comfort show that isn’t afraid to pull you out of your comfort zone a bit, hitting viewers with a surprise cold snap before settling back into the snug warmth that only family can bring, chosen or otherwise.”AV Club“Despite a few foibles, this more heartbreaking and less wry take on middle-age friendships and crises is extremely enjoyable.”Tina Fey, Will Forte and Steve Carwell in The Four SeasonsThe Los Angeles Times“A very watchable, breezy, bumpy new Netflix comedy [...] it’s an adult entertainment in the original sense, notwithstanding a character ‘only’ in her early 30s, with jokes about aches and pains, flagging energy, earlier bedtimes, the stresses of long relationships in longer lives, and here and there a sense of nostalgia for the people they used to be. Many will relate.”USA Today“With all these excellent performances and an array of picturesque vacation spots from a lake house to a ski resort, The Four Seasons makes for a breezy summer binge. Still, it’s the substance that sneaks up on you that really makes The Four Seasons a winner, even if it’s a slower burn from the jump.”Variety“Most notably, the tone skews decidedly dramedic, trading a rapid pace of punchlines for a more melancholy take on long-term matrimony. The Four Seasons is ultimately able to deliver some astute insights into adult relationships, but also struggles to settle into this awkward new rhythm. The Fey brain trust is visibly working to expand its repertoire – an effort that, inevitably, comes with some growing pains.”Marco Calvani and Colman Domingo in The White LotusThe Hollywood Reporter“Its eight half-hours don’t feel like time well spent so much as just spent, in ways too innocuous to hate but too tedious to treasure.”The Telegraph (2/5) “What a waste of the assembled talent. The real crime, though? It will be a long time before I can hear Vivaldi’s music, carelessly smeared across the soundtrack, without triggering memories of this midlife misfire.”The Four Seasons is now streaming on Netflix.READ MORE:Thought The Stars Of You Season 5 Looked Familiar?
