Cynthia Erivo Breaks Silence After Protecting Ariana Grande At Wicked Premiere
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo at the Wicked For Good premiere in Singapore last weekCynthia Erivo has opened up about stepping in to protect Ariana Grande during a worrying moment on the red carpet. The pair recently attended the Wicked For Good premiere in Singapore, and were walking the “yellow carpet” to promote the new movie musical when a man leapt over the barrier and grabbed Ariana, jumping up and down. Ariana was visibly shocked while her co-star Cynthia immediately intervened to separate her from the man – a decision she has now described as “instinct” during an interview on the US’ Today show. “I wasn’t really thinking, I just wanted to make sure my friend was safe,” the Oscar nominee said. “I’m sure he didn’t mean us harm but you never know with those things and I wanted to make sure she was OK. That was my first instinct.”The man who jumped the barrier was previously identified as Johnson Wen – a 26-year-old Australian content creator known to his online followers as “Pyjama Man” - who describes himself as a “Troll Most Hated”. He has since been handed a short prison sentence for the incident because of his history of similar disruptions.Wen jumped on stage during Katy Perry’s Sydney concert in June earlier this year and – as he did to Ariana – grabbed the singer while jumping up and down.He also caused a public disturbance at the Paris Olympics last year, as well as at the Cricket World Cup in 2023.Following his actions at the Wicked premiere, Ariana fans have accused the content creator of “re-traumatising” the singer after she has previously spoken about the PTSD she experienced in the wake of the suicide bomb attack on her May 2017 concert in Manchester that killed 22 people.Ariana has not addressed the Wen incident, however her fellow Wicked actor Marissa Bode posted a video on TikTok last week criticising so-called “fans” who make others “feel incredibly unsafe” with “no remorse”.“I don’t think anybody can claim to be a fan and just disregard boundaries, see somebody as a product and not a person, and demand everything from them and have this sense of entitlement,” she said.Cynthia and Ariana’s bond has been a much-loved aspect of the Wicked films. The two co-stars have created many viral moments while promoting the films from “holding space” to Ariana recently joining Cynthia in not giving any interviews after she lost her voice out of solidarity.Wicked For Good arrived in cinemas on Friday, and has received mixed reviews from critics who can’t agree on whether it’s “exhilarating” or “painful”.READ MORE:At Last We Know Who Plays Dorothy In Wicked For Good (And It Isn't Who We Thought)Ariana Grande Shares Hidden Meaning Behind Her Wicked For Good Premiere LookWe Can't Stop Watching This Behind-The-Scenes Clip Of The Guy Who 'Plays The Broomstick' In Wicked
