Daniel Day-Lewis Is 'Cross' That 'Method Acting' Is Now Associated With 'Behaving Like A Lunatic'
Daniel Day-LewisDaniel Day-Lewis has admitted he’s unimpressed at the direction that supposed Method acting has taken in recent history. The three-time Oscar winner is known for throwing himself into his roles, which has reportedly included spending three days in solitary confinement for In The Name Of The Father, living in the wilderness for a month ahead of his appearance in The Last Of The Mohicans and training extensively in boxing and sewing for The Boxer and Phantom Thread. As part of a new interview with the New York Times, the British actor admitted: “I don’t really like thinking of acting in terms of craft at all.”“Of course, there are techniques you can learn,” he continued, pointing out that Method acting has “become an easy target these days”.Daniel then shared: “I’m a little cross these days to hear all kinds of people gobbling off and saying things like ‘gone full Method’, which I think is meant to imply that a person’s behaving like a lunatic in an extreme fashion.“Everyone tends to focus on the less important details of the work, and those details always seem to involve some sort of self-flagellation or an experience that imposes upon oneself a severe discomfort or mental instability.“But of course, in the life of an actor, it has to principally be about the internal work.”Daniel Day-Lewis at the 2013 OscarsModern-day examples of Method actors include Jared Leto, whose behaviour on the set of Suicide Squad raised eyebrows among his colleagues, and Jeremy Strong, whose Succession co-star Brian Cox has had a few things to get off his chest over the years about his on-screen son’s approach. After Phantom Thread, Daniel took a step back from acting.“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor,” his team said at the time. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”However, his break came to an end after seven years when he teamed up with his son Ronan Day-Lewis for the new film Anemone, and he later admitted he regretted prematurely announcing his retirement.Anemone – which Ronan directed, and also features Sean Bean and Samantha Morton – hit US cinemas last week, and is set to debut in the UK on Friday 7 November.MORE FILM NEWS:Alexander Skarsgård Opens Up About What Makes The Sex Scenes In His New BDSM Biker Romance So UniqueHim Star Julia Fox Has Her Say After Co-Star Marlon Wayans' Response To The Film's CriticsEmma Thompson Is Glad To Play 'Interesting' Roles Again After 'Really Boring' Phase Of Her Career
