David Lammy Forced To Climb Down After Accusing Nigel Farage Of 'Flirting With Hitler Youth'

David Lammy and other members of the cabinet prepare to listen to Keir Starmer's speech to the Labour conference.David Lammy has climbed down after accusing Nigel Farage of “flirting with Hitler Youth when he was younger” The deputy prime minister made the incendiary allegation after Farage said Keir Starmerwas inciting violence against his party’s supporters.He was referring to historic allegations by one of Farage’s former teachers that he had “marched through a quiet Sussex village very late at night shouting Hitler Youth songs” as a schoolboy.In 2013, Farage described the claims as “complete baloney”.In his keynote speech to the Labour conference in Liverpool, Starmer told the Reform leader his party would “fight you with everything we have” between now and the next election.In a speech directly after Starmer’s address, Farage said Labour’s numerous attacks on him in recent days have been “obsessive”.“It’s a constant attack on me on what we stand for,” he said. “The prime minister has decided to descend into the gutter.”Asked about Farage’s comments, Lammy told the BBC: “I think he’s got a bit of a brass neck, hasn’t he, Nigel Farage?“This story goes back a long way. This is calling out his policies, his policies that would line people up who have a right to be in this country, who might be Indian, who might be Nigerian, and send them home. It’s not British. It doesn’t respect our values.“And Keir Starmer was very articulate about that.”Asked whether he thought Farage was a racist, Lammy said his policies were.He said: “I’m not going to play the man. I’m playing the ball, as our leader did.
