'Deeply Mistaken': Putin's Allies Jump Furiously To His Defence After Trump's U-Turn On Russia
Donald Trump and Vladimir PutinVladimir Putin’s allies have hit back at Donald Trump’s after his unexpected criticism of Russia over its war in Ukraine. The US president was – until recently – very vocal about his support for his one-time friend Putin, even rolling out the red carpet for him for face-to-face talks in Alaska and offering to end the conflict on terms favourable to Russia. He has falsely blamed Ukraine for starting the war on multiple occasions. But after speaking to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the UN on Tuesday, Trump unexpectedly said Ukraine can win back all of its occupied territory from Russia. He also accused Moscow of looking like a “paper tiger” after “aimlessly” fighting for three years. But on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov swiftly rejected Trump’s assertion by insisting Russia is a “bear” instead. He also rebutted the idea Ukraine could reclaim the 20% of its land that Russia currently occupies, describing it as is “deeply mistaken”.The Kremlin insisted that this was “not an aimless war” – while adding the process of normalising relations with the White House was taking much longer than they had initially hoped.Peskov claimed Trump is a “businessman” who is trying to push the world to buy US fuel at a higher price. But he still took a punt on diplomacy by praising Trump’s efforts to end the war and said a phone call could be arranged quickly, according to Russian state news agencies.Meanwhile, former Russian president and the deputy chair of the Russian security council Dmitry Medvedev was a little more outspoken on social media.Posting on Telegram, he claimed: “Once again, he’s slipped into an alternate reality and delivered another round of political incantations on the subject of ‘How weak Russia is.’”He said everything looks different in “that reality” which he claimed both Barack Obama and Joe Biden also lived in.“But Trump isn’t like that!” Medvedev insisted. “I have no doubt that he’ll make another U-turn.“He always does. He’ll probably ask the green pianist [Zelenskyy] to sign the capitulation in a couple of days. Or maybe fly to Mars with Musk, freshly forgiven.“Or do something else very important – something that just might earn him a Nobel Prize.”Medvedev claimed “everything will be alright”, and closed his post by mocking Trump’s regular sign off from social media: “As the saying goes, thank you for your attention to this subject!”Zelenskyy, on the other hand, called this was a “big shift” in the White House’s rhetoric – and it was a world away from when the Ukrainian president was shooed out of the White House in February.Trump also called on Nato to shoot down intruding Russian jets after some of its fighter planes intruded into eastern Europe’s airspace.Related...Labour Minister Hits Back At Donald Trump's Claim London Has Sharia LawTrump Blasts Russia And Says Ukraine Can Win The War In Astonishing U-TurnTrump Loses It Over Jimmy Kimmel's Return In Unhinged New Rant
