Director Of Netflix's New Fred And Rose West Documentary Jumps To Defence Of Controversial Series

The crimes of Fred and Rose West are the subject of a new Netflix three-part seriesThe director of Netflix’s new documentary about Fred and Rose West has dismissed the suggestion the series is intentionally sensational.Earlier this week, Fred And Rose West: A British Horror Story began streaming on Netflix, and while it quickly shot to the top of the platform’s most-watched chart, it also raised questions from some critics about whether a new documentary about the infamous serious killers was really necessary or tasteful.In a new interview with The Independent, filmmaker Dan Dewsbury explained that he was first approached about the project by Netflix, who told him they had access to new police video recordings and audio files.Dewsbury responded by saying that he was intrigued, but would only agree to making the documentary if he could avoid “salacious” tropes that have become a fixture of the true crime genre.Explaining his motivations for making the three-part series, he said: “I’ve done a lot of police stuff before, and the culprit will get 25 years or something like that, and normally that’s where the documentary ends, right?“But I know it doesn’t, I know that the families and people who are involved have to live with it for the rest of their lives, and try and compute what’s happened.”He later insisted: “Look, I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t believe I could do [that].”“The reason why I stand by this series is because I know I’ve done it the right way,” he added. “I’m not a salacious person. I want to bring the biggest audience to this, but I also want to make that audience understand there is a different POV. There is an audience who watch a lot of true crime.
