Doctor Who Star Millie Gibson Gets Candid About 'Horrific' Tabloid Reports About Her
Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday in Doctor WhoFormer Doctor Who star Millie Gibson is opening up about the scrutiny she faced in the press while still appearing on the show.In 2023, Millie joined the long-running sci-fi series as Ruby Sunday, a new companion for Ncuti Gatwa’s Time Lord. However, before her first episode had even aired, the former Coronation Street was the subject of tabloid reports alleging she’d been branded a “diva” behind the scenes. At the time, she chose not to address the rumours, and months later, it was falsely reported that her character was being written out of the show to be replaced with a new companion for the Doctor. This, of course, turned out not to be true, and Millie already knew before her first season was shown that she’d be back for a second. However, she felt unable to set the record straight out of concern that doing so would “spoil” the fate of her character, which put her in a “tough” position emotionally.Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson on the set of Doctor Who“I couldn’t be like, ‘It’s a lie!’ [because] they’d be like, ‘Well, that’s spoilers,’” she told The i Paper. “It was quite hard to stand up for myself without ruining the show. I was like, ‘Oh, this is horrific because it just looks like it’s true’.”She continued: “It was awful. What was frustrating was the amount of people that were like, ‘Oh, sorry, this has happened mate’, and I was like, ‘yeah, it’s not [happened], but thank you’.”Millie also credited her former co-star Ncuti – who already threw his support behind her while the rumours were ongoing – for helping her through this difficult time.“He’s had his time with that,” Millie noted, referring to the backlash Ncuti faced throughout his Doctor Who experience. “And it’s just about just being able to try and shut it out.”After months of speculation, Ncuti bowed out of Doctor Who in the most recent finale, with his character appearing to regenerate into a new Time Lord played by Billie Piper. With the future of Doctor Who still not presently clear, fans have been debating exactly what Billie’s surprise cameo means, and whether or not she’s really set to portray the Sixteenth Doctor in the next season.A new spin-off series, The War Between The Land And The Sea, is also expected to air on the BBC in 2026, starring Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbathu-Raw and Jemma Redgrave, reprising her role as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.MORE DOCTOR WHO:BBC Exec Has 5 Words For Doctor Who Fans Amid Speculation About The Show's FutureNcuti Gatwa Admits He Has This '1 Regret' About His Early Doctor Who ExitDoctor Who Boss Russell T Davies Has A Message For Critics Who Think The Show Is Too 'Woke'
