'Dog Whistle Baloney': Former Tory Minister Slams Robert Jenrick For Defending Jailed Councillor's Wife
Robert Jenrick has said Connolly should be released.A former Tory minister has called for Robert Jenrick to be sacked for defending a Conservative councillor’s wife jailed for inciting racial hatred.Lucy Connolly called for “mass deportation now” amid false rumours that an illegal immigrant had murdered three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport.“Set fire to all the fucking hotels full of the bastards for all I care, while you’re at it take the treacherous government and all the politicians with them,” Connolly posted on X.“I feel physically sick knowing what these families will now have to endure. If that makes me racist so be it.”She eventually deleted the post later the same day, but was jailed for 31 months after pleading guilty to inciting racial hatred. Her appeal against the sentence was rejected last week, prompting fresh complaints from right-wingers, who say it shows free speech is under attack in the UK.Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, raised her case in the House of Commons yesterday as he attacked government plans to release some inmates early sue to proson overcrowding. In a post on X, he said: “The Justice Secretary released Lawson Natty early, who supplied a machete used to kill a 14 year old. She is now halving the sentences for killers and rapists.“Meanwhile Lucy Connolly remains behind bars for a reprehensible, but swiftly deleted tweet. Why? She had no answer.”But Anna Soubry, who was a Tory minister for four years before eventually quitting the party, hit back: “Badenoch should sack Jenrick for defending Connolly. He’s clearly not read the Ct of Appeal judgement in which they dismissed her appeal. If he had he wouldn’t be spouting this dangerous, disingenuous, dog whistle baloney.”#Badenoch should sack #Jenrick for defending Connolly. Pity the Govt Minister didn’t call him out on this. pic.twitter.com/9ONVDHGO4q— Anna Soubry 🇬🇧🏴🇺🇦🇪🇺🖤🤍 (@Anna_Soubry) June 3, 2025Labour peer Ayesha Hazarika last week demolished the argument that Connolly should not have been jailed. She told BBC Newsnight: “You can say your hateful, horrible things, but if you then go, when we are in the middle of a tinderbox situation, where half the country is about the erupt into violence, and you literally incite violence while people are committing acts of violence, I don’t understand why people are so confused about this case.”Hazarika added: “The idea that this country is not a free country is completely and utterly ludicrous. That woman was inciting violence. She is free to think her horrible, racist thoughts. That is fine. What she isn’t allowed to do is go and incite violence.”
