Donald Trump To Announce 'Major Trade Deal' With UK In Boost For Keir Starmer
Keir Starmer and Donald Trump at the White House in February.Donald Trump will announce a “major trade deal” between America and the UK later today, according to reports. The New York Times said progress had been made on an agreement that would see US import tariffs on British steel and cars being cut.Downing Street sources did not deny the story when contacted by HuffPost UK this morning. If confirmed, it would be a huge boost for Keir Starmer’s government.Successive Tory governments, going back nearly 10 years, have tried to strike a trade deal with America since Brexit but failed to do so.Posting on Truth Social last night, Trump said: “Big News Conference tomorrow morning at 10:00 A.M [3pm UK time]., The Oval Office, concerning a MAJOR TRADE DEAL WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF A BIG, AND HIGHLY RESPECTED, COUNTRY. THE FIRST OF MANY!!!”Asked yesterday about reports that the UK was “offering various trade concessions” in areas like cars and steel in order to get a deal over the line, Trump said: “I hope so. They do want to make a deal very badly.“The United Kingdom, like every other country, they want to go shopping in the United States of America.”President Trump says he hopes the UK is offering the US trade concessions pic.twitter.com/IFdzPoETP3— Farrukh (@implausibleblog) May 7, 2025Trump said in February there was “a very good chance” of a US-UK trade deal.Speaking alongside Starmer in the White House, the president said: “I think we could end up with a real trade deal where the tariffs wouldn’t be necessary.“We’ll see, but he earned whatever they pay him today. He was working hard at lunch and I’m very receptive to it.“I think we have a very good chance of arriving at a very good deal ... that could be really terrific for both countries.”The US agreement comes just 48 hours after the government announced it had reached a trade deal with India.A furious row erupted after it emerged that it will mean India workers seconded to the UK being exempt from having to pay National Insurance for three years.Reform UK and the Tories have both accused Labour of making it cheaper to hire foreign workers than British employees. But the government has insisted that similar arrangements are in place as part of trade agreements with around 50 other countries.Related...'Total And Utter Rubbish': Kemi Badenoch In War Of Words With India Over UK Trade DealYvette Cooper 'Blindsided' By Tax Break For Indian Workers In UK Trade DealWhy Badenoch And Farage Are Wrong When They Say India Trade Deal Shows 'Two-Tier Taxes'
