Don't Make This 1 Dangerous Mistake When Driving With Kids

You’re heading on a long car journey and have packed a bag of snacks to keep your kids satiated for the next couple of hours. Or perhaps you’re running late and you give your toddler a treat to keep them content on a 10-minute trip. So many of us have done it, myself included. But a content creator specialising in safety tips for women and kids has revealed this could put kids in a very unsafe situation. Dannah Eve, who has a degree in Criminology and Psychology, said in a video that although giving kids snacks in cars is “convenient” it can “turn to tragedy very quickly” – and paediatricians agree with the advice. Why is offering car snacks a problem? The safety pro explained: “If your child starts choking in their car seat while you’re driving, you won’t be able to reach them in time.“What’s even scarier to think about is that you might not even know what’s happening because they can’t make a sound if their airway is blocked.”She added that in this situation, not only would you have to notice your child is choking, “but you’d also have to find a safe place to pull over, unbuckle yourself, get out of the car, get to the back seat, unbuckle them and get them out of their car seat and out of the car”.You’d then have to perform back blows and abdominal thrusts to try and remove the blockage. In the comments section of the video, people shared their own incidents where kids had choked on snacks in cars. One said: “So many years ago this happened when I was driving with my friend & her baby. It was a knee jerk reaction my friend said she couldn’t believe how I went into action ... I took my seat belt off & went through the seats, unbuckled her toddler & pulled them through and worked on getting those horrible toddler biscuit dislodged.“We just sat in shock and tears with her daughter quite happily playing on my lap after the ordeal. What an experience. Please, please heed the warning, I am grateful that I was able to assist & that the child survived.”Another said: “It happened to my first baby. Thank God her cousin was in the back seat and alerted me.”Choking is a leading cause of death for children under three years old.According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust, young kids are more at risk because they have narrow airways and are still learning “to chew, breathe and swallow in the right order”.The trust’s number one choking prevention tip is to stay with children when they’re eating – and obviously, if you’re driving and focusing on the road, you’re not technically with them.I’ll definitely be following this advice.Related...This Childhood Experience Is More Harmful Than You Might ThinkThe 1 Common Remedy You Should Never Use When Your Child Has A FeverI Was A 'Problem Child'.
