Downing Street has hit back at Trump's tariff chief after he said the UK was Beijing's "compliant servant"The prime minister’s spokesperson has slapped down a claim from Donald Trump’s tariff chief that the UK is China’s “compliant servant”.The US president’s economic adviser Peter Navarro claimed the UK was at risk of having its “blood sucked” dry by Beijing.“If the Chinese vampire can’t suck the American blood, it’s going to suck the UK blood and the EU blood,” he told The Telegraph last week.“The UK has been an all too compliant servant of the Chinese Communist Party because of the string-laden gifts that China gives as a way of spreading its soft power.”Navarro also urged Labour to to avoid becoming a “dumping ground” for goods Beijing no longer sells to the States amid their trade war.Asked if the UK agreed with Navarro, the prime minister’s spokesperson told reporters: “No, we always take a clear-eyed and strategic approach to managing our relations with China, our approach will always be to put British interests first.“I will remind you that just last month, we announced fresh action to mitigate the impacts of potential future dumping of cheap goods into the UK as well as plans to review the customs treatment of low value imports.”Trump scuppered trade relations with China when he slapped sky-high tariffs on Chinese goods going into the US.Beijing quickly retaliated, so Trump took tariffs on some products up to 145% – meaning China has been on the hunt to find other markets.Meanwhile, chancellor Rachel Reeves warned that cutting ties with China, the second-biggest economy in the world, would be “foolish”.She previously told The Telegraph: “China is the second-biggest economy in the world, and it would be, I think, very foolish, to not engage.
