Elon Musk Is Leaving The Trump Administration After Just 5 Months
Elon Musk speaks during an event with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office in February.Elon Musk is leaving his position as top advisor to US president Donald Trump just five months after he returned to the White House. The world’s richest man became a key Trump aide in the run-up to the presidential election last year after he donated $288 million to his election campaign. He was appointed to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a non-governmental body meant to reduce federal spending by $1 trillion – a target it has definitely not met.Musk announced his decision to leave government on Wednesday, writing on his social media platform X: “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.“The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”A White House official confirmed his departure to the Associated Press news agency.Musk and Trump were once very effusive about their admiration for one another, with the president even using the White House driveway to sell Teslas.Musk’s relationship with Keir Starmer, however, has always been significantly cooler. He stirred far-right conspiracy theories in the UK over the violent riots which erupted last summer, claiming “civil war is inevitable”.Musk also claimed Home Office minister Jess Phillips should be in prison after she rejected calls for a local inquiry into historic child abuse in Oldham earlier this year. The tech mogul has openly backed Reform UK, too although he caused further divisions when he supported Rupert Lowe – who now sits as an independent – to lead the party rather than Nigel Farage.Musk’s departure came a day after he openly admitted he was “disappointed” by Trump’s so-called “big beautiful bill” which includes tax breaks and spending cuts, saying it undermined his work at DOGE.The tech mogul told CBS: “I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. But I don’t know if it could be both.”Musk, also the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, had previously warned against Trump’s protectionist tariffs saying he was in favour of free trade.Musk had already stepped back from politics in recent weeks and said he planned to reduce his political spending, saying: “I think I’ve done enough.” “The federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than I realised. I thought there were problems, but it sure is an uphill battle trying to improve things in DC, to say the least,” he told The Washington Post. Related...Elon Musk Admits Glaringly Obvious Truth About His Foray Into PoliticsElon Musk Dumps On Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill'Kamala Harris Takes Subtle Swipe At Elon Musk In Rare Appearance
