Eurovision Organisers Have Another Update On Israel's Involvement After 'Developments In The Middle East'
Yuval Raphael represented Israel at Eurovision earlier this yearEurovision organisers have announced that a vote to determine whether or not Israel will remain a part of the annual Song Contest next year will no longer be going ahead.Controversy around Israel’s involvement at Eurovision has been rife for years now, with several participating countries’ national broadcasters saying in the last few months that they will withdraw from the competition if Israel is invited back in 2026.As a result, it was confirmed last month that each country in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the group of national broadcasters who put on the music event each year, would take part in a vote in December to determine whether or not Israel is allowed to return.However, in light of the recent historic peace plan in the Middle East, the EBU has now revealed this vote will no longer be going ahead.A spokesperson said on Monday evening: “Due to recent developments in the Middle East, the EBU’s Executive Board agrees that there is a clear need for an open and in-person discussion among members concerning the issue of participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.“Therefore, the matter has been added to the agenda of the regular winter General Assembly, scheduled for December, instead of an extraordinary session beforehand.”JJ won the Eurovision Song Contest in May on behalf of AustriaBroadcasters for a total of four countries – Ireland, Slovenia, Spain and The Netherlands – had previously announced they would withdraw from Eurovision if Israel competes in 2026, with numerous others suggesting they would follow suit.Germany’s chancellor, meanwhile, had said the opposite, backing calls to boycott the contest next year in the event that Israel’s invite was rescinded, similar to how Russia was banned from competing in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine.A ceasefire has now been in place in Gaza since last Friday after both Israel and Hamas agreed to US leader Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan.However, some experts have also cautioned that numerous hurdles still need to be cleared before a long-term peace is in place.MORE EUROVISION:These Are All The Countries That Have Spoken Out About Israel's Involvement At Eurovision 2026This Is How British Eurovision Fans Really Feel About Isreal Potentially ReturningReigning Eurovision Winner JJ Calls For Israel To Be Removed From The Contest
