Eurovision Suffers Fresh UK Ratings Blow In Another Controversial Year For The Contest

Remember Monday represented the UK at this year's Eurovision Song ContestEurovision suffered another ratings dip in the UK over the weekend, for the second year in a row.Following the event in 2024, it was reported that the annual song contest had shed around two million viewers year-on-year, a drop of just under 25%.Although a fall in viewing figures in the UK was to be expected last year (the previous contest had been held in the UK for the first time in a quarter-century, meaning more people than usual would have been tuning in), it also came at the end of an especially controversial Eurovision, largely relating to Israel’s participation. It’s now been revealed that this trend of dipping viewing figures in the UK continued into 2025, with 6.7 million viewers watching live on BBC One, compared to last year’s 7.6 million. This is a drop of almost a million in the space of a year, and is also the lowest UK audience for a Eurovision Song Contest in a decade.Austrian singer JJ celebrating his win in Basel, SwitzerlandEurovision was once again at the centre of conversation in the run-up to this year’s event due to Israel’s participation, amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with the Palestine-led BDS movement even calling for a boycott.Several national broadcasters raised questions to organisers about Israel’s involvement in the weeks leading up to the conversation, while more than 70 artists and performers associated with the contest – including numerous former winners – co-signed an open letter calling for Israel to be dropped. These calls were later backed by then-reigning winner Nemo, who told HuffPost UK in an exclusive interview: “Israel’s actions are fundamentally at odds with the values that Eurovision claims to uphold – peace, unity and respect for human rights.”Earlier this month, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) confirmed that it would be holding conversations with its members about a variety of topics, including Israel’s participation, but only once this year’s contest was over.At this year’s contest, the UK was represented by girl group Remember Monday, who finished in 19th place of 26 acts, but failed to secure any points from Eurovision voters (marking the second time in a row this has happened for a UK act).Israel, meanwhile, finished in second place behind overall winners Austria.MORE EUROVISION NEWS:Remember Monday Speak Out On Their Eurovision Experience After Getting Zero Points From ViewersEurovision Protester Speaks Out After Viral Clip Sparks Anger Over Security 'Aggression'Eurovision Organisers Confirm Spanish Broadcaster Was Spoken To Over Pro-Palestine Message
