Even Kemi Badenoch Does Not Deny Tories Are 'Sliding Into Irrelevance' In Awkward Exchange
Kemi Badenoch is the Tory leader.Even the Conservative Party leader did not deny that the Tories are “sliding into irrelevance” in a bizarre exchange with a journalist today. After delivering a speech explaining how her party were offering to work with the government on its plans to cut the welfare bill, Kemi Badenoch just side-stepped a question about just how much weight her party still carries. GB News’ Chris Hope said: “Last night, at the parliamentary Labour Party, Keir Starmer talked about Reform UK twice, talked about the Green Party as the problem facing Labour.“Today, [education secretary] Bridget Phillipson talks more about Reform – doesn’t mention the Tory Party.“You haven’t mentioned Reform at all in your speech. Do you worry that you’re sliding into irrelevance in politics as a party?”She replied: “Reform want to increase welfare spending. I did mention them. I said, ‘every single other party’. They don’t get any special treatment, they’re just as bad as all the other left-wing parties.”That caused some half-hearted applause around the room, while Badenoch continued: “The fact is the prime minister is facing a political crisis.“He is now more focused on what is going on with the Labour Party than what it is going on with the country.“It is my job as leader of the opposition to bring attention to the issues which affect all of us, not on who is going to deputy leader for Labour.”But Badenoch herself is thought to be facing a growing crisis of confidence from within her party, as the Tories continue to languish behind both Labour and Reform in the polls. The latest YouGov poll put the Conservatives on 17%, while Labour are ahead on 20% and Reform on 28%.It comes as yet another former Tory minister, Nadine Dorries, defected to Reform last week, claiming: “The Tory Party is dead. Its members now need to think the unthinkable and look to the future.”Other failed right-wing ex-Tories to have joined Reform include Dame Andrea Jenkyns, who infamously once gave the middle finger to protesters outside Downing Street, and Jake Berry, who was briefly Conservative chairman under Liz Truss.'Do you worry your party is sliding into irrelevance in politics?'@ChristopherHope grills Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch on the relevance of her party. pic.twitter.com/xmgNJFDJrW— GB News (@GBNEWS) September 9, 2025Related...BBC Presenter Skewers Chris Philp As He Brutally Exposes Tory Asylum Hotel HypocrisyMinister Accuses Top Tory Of Hypocrisy Over Migrant Deal Criticism In Scathing TakedownEx-Tory MP Defects To Reform Despite Urging Everyone Not To Vote Reform A Year Ago
