Farage Wants Reform In The House Of Lords. An Unearthed Video Shows How He Has Changed His Tune

(AP Photo/Kin Cheung)Nigel Farage has called on Keir Starmer to let him nominate some Reform UK members to join the House of Lords. But a video unearthed by HuffPost UK shows that the party leader used to have a very different attitude towards parliament’s upper chamber.Farage has written to the prime minister claiming it is unfair that parties like the Lib Dems and Greens have peers, but Reform does not.In his letter, he said: “My party received over 4.1 million votes at the general election in July 2024. We have since won a large number of seats in local government, led in the national opinion polls for many months and won the only by-election of this parliament.”In what he said was a “modest request”, Farage said “Reform UK wishes to appoint life peers to the upper house at the earliest possible opportunity”.But speaking on LBC in 2018, the Reform chief had a very different opinion on the Lords, which he said should be abolished altogether. In a video clip still available on Xm he said: “All I can say is the House of Lords is stuffed full of former MPs, party donors, spivs, former European commissioners. They’re a London-based clique. Most of them are mates of Blair’s and Cameron’s. “The whole place is a complete and utter disgrace and the sooner we close the whole shooting match down and replace it with an elected senate, the better.”.@Nigel_Farage on the House of Lords: “The whole place is a complete and utter disgrace and the sooner we replace it with an elected Senate the better!” #Brexitpic.twitter.com/G08ktxBD2s— LBC (@LBC) April 18, 2018Farage’s desire to appoint peers to the House of Lords also appears to be at odds with his previous criticisms of the “unelected bureaucrats” in the European Union. The Reform leader was also accused of hypocrisy last month when he questioned why members of the cabinet should be elected politicians. He said: ” Look at America. Scott Bessent has come in as the US Treasury secretary. Never stood for election in his life, but a very, very successful businessman.”Social media users were quick to point out the apparent inconsistency in Farage’s views.https://t.co/AF1RZLkn4lpic.twitter.com/c2ryGpD79f— Colin the Dachshund (@DachshundColin) July 3, 2025Man who campaigned against Bureucratic European technocracy for 3 decades now believes Britain should adopt the same system https://t.co/Bq7EZNRRjn— Liberite🔶 🇪🇺 👩🏼💼 (@brownliberite) July 3, 2025Related...Cabinet Minister Dismisses Nigel Farage's Plea For Reform Peers With 1 Brutal CommentLBC Presenter Fact Checks Nigel Farage's Claim Small Boats Have Made UK More Dangerous For Women And GirlsNicola Sturgeon Does Not Hold Back As She Takes Down 'Odious' Nigel Farage's Character
