Former Superman Star Has A Tiresome Response To New Film's Progressive Take
David Corenswet in SupermanIs it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s “woke” Superman, apparently… The superhero franchise is about to get a whole new revamp as David Corenswet suits up to star as Clark Kent in director James Gunn’s take on the iconic DC Comics character. So far, the film has received somewhat mixed reviews from critics, but others are taking issue with the movie for a whole different reason. And that’s because it’s 2025, folks, and in case you weren’t aware, a whole lot of very loud people are still complaining that Hollywood is too “woke” these days – an accusation that’s often levelled against anything that takes a remotely progressive political or societal stance. In the lead-up to Superman’s official release this week, a host of right-wing commentators and news personalities have been claiming the film is pushing a “woke” ideology. This began when the former Marvel director told The Sunday Times that he considers Superman “the story of America”.He said: “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.” Since then, one of the most famous actors to ever portray Superman has voiced his complaints about the film, arguing his beliefs that the character is going in the wrong direction.Dean Cain played the superhero in the TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman between 1993 and 1997, and has taken issue with the Guardians Of The Galaxy director’s vision. Dean Cain in Lois And Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman“How woke is Hollywood going to make this character?” he said in a video interview with TMZ.Dean went on to say: “How much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters [to] exist for the times?“For Superman, it was ‘truth, justice, and the American way.’ Well, they dropped that… They came up with ‘truth, justice, and a better tomorrow’. Changing beloved characters I don’t think is a great idea.”The mention of the Disney live-action remake comes after star Rachel Zegler’s casting as Snow White was met with a racist backlash from select critics who took issue with her Latin American heritage.Dean went on to share his belief that the “‘American way’ is immigrant friendly, tremendously immigrant-friendly”.“But there are rules,” he suggested. “You can’t come in saying, ‘I want to get rid of all the rules in America, because I want it to be more like Somalia.’ Well that doesn’t work, because you had to leave Somalia to come here”.He also argued that there has to be “limits” because we “can’t have everybody in the United States. We can’t have everybody, society will fail”.Dean Cain in 2019Director James’ comments on Superman’s immigrant roots unsurprisingly ruffled some MAGA feathers this week, with Dean going on to parrot right-wing talking points about immigration.“I think bringing Superman into it, I think that was a mistake by James Gunn to say it’s an immigrant thing, and I think it’s going to hurt the numbers on the movie,” he added. He concluded that he was initially “excited for the film” and is still “rooting for it to be a success”, despite his distaste for its so-called politics.Asked by Variety about the MAGA backlash to the movie’s politics at the Superman premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, James Gunn simply reiterated that his movie “is for everyone”.Without directly addressing the criticism, he added that he thinks the movie is “about kindness, and I think that’s something everyone can relate to”.James Gunn responds to MAGA backlash over calling Superman an immigrant: "I think this movie is about kindness, which everyone can relate to." pic.twitter.com/0MHg8gzkzG— Variety (@Variety) July 8, 2025Superman is out in cinemas on Friday July 11.READ MORE:Superman Director Addresses Right-Wing Backlash After Claims The Character Is An ImmigrantThis Wild Scene Was Removed From The New Superman Film After Controversy During Test ScreeningCritics Have A Lot Of Strong Feelings About The New Superman Movie – Here's What They're Saying
