Gary Neville Blames 'Angry, Middle-Aged White Men' For Causing Divide In UK Society After Terror Attack
Gary Neville blamed "angry, middle-aged, white men" for fuelling divisions in UK society.Gary Neville has blamed “angry, middle-aged white men” for dividing British society following last week’s Manchester terror attack. Two people were killed and three more were injured last Thursday when Jihad Al-Shamie drove into a synagogue on Yom Kippur, while wielding a knife. Police are also looking into a suspected hate crime after a mosque in Peacehaven, East Sussex, was set on fire on Saturday. In a video posted on social media, the former England football manager Neville pointed to the synagogue attack and warned: “We’re all being turned on each other.”“The division that is being created is absolutely disgusting,” he said. “Mainly created by angry, middle-aged, white men, who know exactly what they’re doing.”He said he had taken a Union Jack flag down recently, but not because he’s not patriotic.“I’ve been building in this city for 15-20 years and no-one’s put a Union Jack up in the last 15-20 years, so why do you need to put one up now?” Neville said.“Because quite clearly it’s sending a message to everybody that there is something you don’t like, the Union Jack flag being used in a negative fashion is not right.“I’m a proud supporter of England, of Great Britain, of our country, and I will champion it anywhere in the world, I think it’s one of the greatest places to live.“But we need to check ourselves and start to think about bringing ourselves back to a neutral point because we’re being pulled right and left.”He said he’s played in football teams – like Manchester United – with players from around the world, and “we were a beautiful team”.The staunch Remainer said: “Brexit has had a devastating impact on this country and the messaging is getting dangerous, extremely dangerous. All these idiots who are out there spreading hate speech, in any form, abuse in any form, we must stop promoting them.“We must stop elevating our voices towards them and get back to being a country of love, of peace, of harmony, and become a team again.”His remarks come after home secretary Shabana Mahmood admitted there is a “problem” with integration in the UK.Far-right agitator Tommy Robinson also led more than 100,000 people through London last month on a “Unite the Kingdom” rally.Twenty-six Metropolitan Police officers were injured after allegedly being attacked by some of those taking part.Prime minister Keir Starmer hit back at the time, warning: “We will not stand for assaults on police officers doing their job or for people feeling intimidated on our streets because of their background or the colour of their skin.“Britain is a nation proudly built on tolerance, diversity and respect. Our flag represents our diverse country and we will never surrender it to those that use it as a symbol of violence, fear and division.”Related...Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood Says Synagogue Attack Shows There Is A 'Problem' With Integration'Shame On You': David Lammy Heckled At Vigil For Synagogue Attack VictimsSynagogue Attack: Shabana Mahmood Urges Pro-Palestine Protesters Not To March This Weekend
