George Clooney Laments 'Mistake' Of Kamala Harris Replacing Joe Biden In 2024 US Election
George Clooney George Clooney has shared his frank take on last year’s American presidential election. As well as his award-winning acting career, Clooney is also known for voicing his political views, and is a staunch supporter of the US Democratic party.Months before the election got underway, the Gravity star penned a piece in the New York Times titled: “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee.”In the article, Clooney called on Joe Biden to drop out of the race, after his initial debates against Donald Trump raised eyebrows among his supporters.“We are not going to win in November with this president,” he wrote in the piece. “On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate.“This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and Congress member and governor who I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly.”Eventually, Biden did drop out of the race, and was replaced by his vice president Kamala Harris.Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in January 2025However, in November 2024, it was confirmed that Trump would be returning to the White House for a second, non-consecutive term after the Republicans were revealed to have won the election.During a new interview with CBS, Clooney insisted that he had no regrets about the opinion piece that he wrote, but said that the appointment of Kamala Harris as the Democrats’ candidate was a “mistake”.Asked by broadcaster if he’d “do that again”, Clooney insisted: “Yes. We had a chance.”He pointed out: “I wanted there to be, as I wrote in the op-ed, a primary. ‘Let’s battle-test this quickly, and get it up and going’.“I think the mistake with it being Kamala is she had to run against her own record. And it’s very hard to do, if the point of running is to say, ‘I’m not that person’. It’s hard to do. And so she was given a very tough task.”Clooney reiterated that he thinks Harris running was “a mistake, quite honestly”, saying that to not have shared his opinion in the New York Times would be “to say, ‘I’m not going to tell the truth’”.Donald TrumpAsked if he’d seen Biden’s son Hunter’s now-infamous reaction to his remarks, Clooney said: “The reality is, I don’t think looking backwards like that is helpful to anyone, particularly to him. I don’t think it’s helpful for the Democratic Party. And so, I’m just going to wish him well on his ongoing recovery and I hope he does well and leave it at that.“I have many personal opinions about it, but I don’t find it helpful to have a public spat with him. So…”Throughout Trump’s political career, Clooney has been one of his vocal critics, even getting into a back-and-forth with the president on multiple occasions.Back in 2011, Clooney cast doubt on ever running for president himself, claiming: “Look, there’s a guy in office right now [Barack Obama], who is smarter than almost anybody you know, who is nicer, and who has more compassion than almost anybody you know. And he’s having an almost impossible time governing. Why would anyone really volunteer for that job?“I have a really good job, you know? I get to hang out with very seductive people… and so I have no interest [in running for president].”READ MORE:George Clooney’s Theory About The Future Of ‘Trumpism’ Doubles As A Diss To The Republican PartyGeorge Clooney Makes Trump An Offer In Taunting Clapback: ‘I Will If He Does’George Clooney Calls Biden's Decision To Drop Out Of Presidential Race A 'Selfless Act'
