Harry Potter Director Insists Reunion Would Be 'Impossible' Due To JK Rowling Controversy
Harry Potter director Chris Columbus on the set of The Chamber Of Secrets with Rupert Grint and Daniel RadcliffeFormer Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has ruled out ever getting the film’s original cast back together again, due to the ongoing controversy surrounding the franchise’s creator, JK Rowling.Chris helmed the first two films in the fantasy series, and served as an executive producer on the third. The Oscar nominee is currently on the promo trail for his latest film The Thursday Murder Club, and naturally, the subject of Harry Potter has already come up more than once.During a fresh interview with The Times, Chris was asked how likely he thought it was that we’d ever see Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson back in action as Harry, Ron and Hermione in some class of Harry Potter reboot.“It’s never going to happen,” he said, pointing to the backlash Rowling has faced due to her commentary about trans issues, which has included repeatedly and deliberately misgendering transgender public figures, and donating tens of thousands of pounds to the campaign group which raised the initial legal challenge that led to the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that the legal definition of a woman should include only those who were assigned female at birth.Chris continued: “It’s gotten so complicated with all the political stuff. Everyone in the cast has their own opinion, which is different from her opinion, which makes it impossible.”JK RowlingHe continued: “I haven’t spoken to Miss Rowling in a decade or so, so I have no idea what’s going on with her, but I keep very close contact with Daniel Radcliffe and I just spoke to him a few days ago. I still have a great relationship with all the kids in the cast.”In recent history, Daniel, Rupert and Emma have all spoken out in support of the transgender community, and distanced themselves from Rowling’s views. The trio last came together in a 2022 reunion special dubbed Return To Hogwarts, to commemorate 20 years since the release of the first film, which did not feature Rowling, except in archive footage.Earlier this year, it was revealed that original cast member Tom Felton was returning to the role of Draco Malfoy in the Broadway play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.Harry Potter is also currently being adapted for the small screen by US broadcaster HBO, which has already garnered controversy due to Rowling’s involvement as a producer.READ MORE:Ex-Harry Potter Director Shares 2-Word Response To JK Rowling Controversy After Ditching HBO RebootHarry Potter Director Has A Very Blunt Message Ahead Of New TV AdaptationTom Felton Shrugs Off JK Rowling Controversy After Announcing Harry Potter Return
