Here's Why John Lennon's Sister Is Not Happy About Paul Mescal's Casting In New Beatles Films

The Beatles at the premiere of A Hard Day's Night in 1964John Lennon’s half-sister isn’t exactly singing Paul Mescal’s praises, after the Normal People star was cast as one of the leads in a massive new project about The Beatles.Paul will join fellow actors Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn and Barry Keoghan in a quartet of new films about The Fab Four, to be helmed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes. The Gladiator II actor will play Paul McCartney, while Harris, Joseph and Barry will play John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, respectively.Paul Mescal in Cannes earlier this weekDuring a new interview with MailOnline, the late Imagine singer’s sister Julia Baird voiced her agreement with those disappointed the movie didn’t opt for actors originally from Liverpool.“What’s wrong with Liverpool?” she questioned. “We have actors, and they speak the language.”Paul and Barry both originally hail from Ireland, while Harris and Joseph are Londoners.Julia also lamented that producers didn’t choose to cast unknown actors for whom the film could have been a breakthrough moment.“I don’t think anything other than, have they been investigated and looked at Liverpool actors?” she questioned.“Paul Mescal is in everything – get real, come on. There are more actors out there waiting for a go, and for a chance.”She added: “It will be interesting to see what kind of accent he comes up with, because nobody can do a Liverpool accent. They all get it wrong.”Julia Baird outside the original entrance to Liverpool's Cavern club in 2007Each of the four films will focus on a different member of The Beatles, with filmmaker Sam claiming they’d all be released in cinemas within a month of each other.Sony Pictures’ CEO recently claimed the innovative project would be the “first binge-able theatrical experience”, with the four films slated for release in 2028.Aimee Lou Wood was recently rumoured to have been cast opposite Joseph as George Harrison’s first wife Pattie Boyd, while Anna Sawai of Shōgun fame has dismissed rumours that she’s in the running to play Yoko Ono.MORE FILM NEWS:This X-Rated Scene Was Cut From Alexander Skarsgård And Harry Melling's Kinky Biker RomanceIs Lilo & Stitch 'A Travesty' Or 'Disney's Best Live-Action Remake Yet'?
