Him Star Julia Fox Has Her Say After Co-Star Marlon Wayans' Response To The Film's Critics
Julia Fox and Tyriq Withers in HimJulia Fox has weighed in after her Him co-star Marlon Wayans responded to critics of their new movie. The pair play a couple in the new sports-centric horror movie – helmed by Justin Tipping and co-produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele – in which Marlon stars as legendary American football player Isaiah White and Julia plays his wife, a kooky and mysterious social media influencer and lifestyle guru.Early reviews of the film were released a few weeks ago, with its critical score on the aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes initially clocking in at just 28% (this has risen slightly to 31% at the time of writing, while its audience score is notably higher at 58%).Responding to this, Marlon shared screenshots of some of his other most popular films’ Rotten Tomatoes scores, including White Chicks and Scary Movie, pointing out that while critics may not have been impressed with them at the time, they eventually became beloved by audiences.Tyriq Withers and Marlon Wayans as Cam and Isaiah in Him“Just to be clear, I respect critics,” he wrote. “Their job is to critique. I respect their work. It shapes our industry.“But an opinion does not always mean it’s everyone’s opinion. Some movies are ahead of the curve. Innovation is not always embraced and art is to be interpreted and it’s subjective. I’ve had a career of making classic movies that weren’t critically [well-received] and those movies went on to be CLASSICS.“So, don’t take anyone’s opinion just go see for yourself. Love to all.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by Marlon Wayans (@marlonwayans)Speaking to HuffPost UK ahead of Him’s release in the UK, Julia shared that she “completely agrees” with her on-screen husband’s take.“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but I think they’re wrong, respectfully,” she said of those who have given harsh reviews of Him.Reflecting more generally on film reviews, Julia claimed they are not really “something that I pay attention to”, when it comes to choosing which movies she wants to watch.“If a movie comes up two or three times in my orb, I’m like, ‘OK, I need to go see this’,” she explained. “I’ll look at the reviews after, you know? Just to see if other people felt the same way I did.”She continued: “My favourite movie in the world, Running With Scissors, also has a horrible Rotten Tomatoes score – all the movies I love have, like, horrible ratings. I don’t know if I have bad taste or what it is, or if they just don’t get it. But yeah… critics are just people. They’re just people. Like, I’m not going to base everything on what a critic is saying.”And while film reviews might not be something Julia intentionally seeks out, there is one exception.“Oh no, if I’m in them, I’m looking,” she quipped. “But if I’m not… no.”Julia Fox at the premiere of her film HimHim centres around an up-and-coming American football star who survives a life-altering injury and seeks help from a revered pro in the industry with his comeback – only for things to quickly begin taking an unsettling turn. The film also features Tyriq Withers as up-and-comer Cam, while Jim Jefferies plays a sinister medic.Read our full interview with Julia Fox this weekend.
