'Huge Mistake': Trump Envoy Sends Strong Warning To Putin About Ukraine Peace Negotiations
Donald Trump with Keith Kellogg, pictured in 2017.Donald Trump’s envoy to Ukraine has issued a bleak warning to Vladimir Putin about the Russian leader’s ongoing reluctance to reach a peace deal. The US president, who has expressed great sympathy for Moscow over its brutal invasion of its European neighbour, has become increasingly frustrated with his Russian counterpart in recent weeks. On his social media platform Truth Social last night, Trump wrote: “What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realise is that if it weren’t for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD. He’s playing with fire!”The US Special Envoy to Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, later told Fox News that the president was emphasising the “value of personal relationships”.He added that it would clearly be a “huge mistake” for Russia to sever personal relations with the US president.Kellogg explained: “I think the fire [Trump is] talking about is the personal relationship.“Because one thing with President Trump that he really does value, and I really understand when I see him do this, is the value of personal relationships and it’s really good about talking to people and working with it.”He claimed that Trump’s “instincts are rock solid” and “based on his personal relationships he has with leaders”.Kellogg noted: “You don’t want to break that relationship with President Trump. I don’t think you do. You get a lot further with President Trump when you can establish this personal relationship.”But the envoy also rejected Trump’s claim over the weekend that Putin had gone “absolutely crazy” with his latest bombardments over Ukraine.Kellogg said: “No, I don’t think Vladimir Putin has gone crazy, what I think he’s doing is stretching the envelope.“The one thing you don’t do is you put President Trump in a position where he thinks he is being used. I think that is a terrible position for him to be in.” He said the US president has given Putin “real opportunities” to end the war, but Russia is still attacking civilian targets in Ukraine.Trump’s shifting rhetoric comes led to a stern response from Putin ally, deputy chair of the Russian security council Dmitry Medvedev, last night. He said: “Regarding Trump’s words about Putin ‘playing with fire’ and ‘really bad things’ happening to Russia. I only know of one REALLY BAD thing — WWIII. I hope Trump understands this!”Similarly, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov suggested Trump’s recent attacks on Putin are part of an “emotional overload”.Trump’s recent anger towards Moscow came shortly before German chancellor Friedrich Merz revealed that Western allies have now lifted range restrictions on the weapons they give to Ukraine. It means the beleaguered nation will now be able to strike military targets well behind Russian borders.Ukraine’s allies have previously been reluctant to allow their weapons to be used for attacks – rather than just as a defence mechanism – out of fear it would drag them into direct conflict with Russia.Related...Trump Brags About Shielding Putin, And It’s Not Going Over Well On Social MediaUK, US And Allies Set To Lift Range Restrictions On Weapons Given To Ukraine After Trump's Putin AttackRussia Tries To Downplay Trump's Claim Putin Has Gone 'Absolutely Crazy'
