Hugh Grant Blasts 'Pathetic' Rules At His Children's 'Ridiculous Posh Private Schools'
Hugh GrantHugh Grant has hit out at the “kind of ridiculous posh private schools” where he sends his own children for their “pathetic” policies and attitudes towards technology in the classroom.Earlier this week, the Bafta winner appeared at an event for the campaign group Close Screens, Open Minds, who are calling for the ban of smartphones, tablets and laptops in UK classrooms.Per The Telegraph, the Love Actually star described himself as “another angry parent fighting the eternal, exhausting and depressive battle with children who only want to be on a screen”.He explained that the “final straw” for him was when he heard that one of his children’s schools had told parents “with some smugness”, that every child was being given a Chromebook laptop, on which they do some lessons and all their homework.“[I] just thought that is the last fucking thing they need, and the last thing we need,” Hugh lamented.Turning his attention to his kids’ own “ridiculous posh private schools”, he continued: “They’re the ones saying they’re not going to play outside today because it’s raining, or they can’t go on the climbing frame because it’s windy. It’s pathetic.“It seems to me that there is space here for a hero school, a set of schools, to break the mould.”Hugh added that some parents feel too nervous about “rocking the boat” by complaining to schools, and lamented that his past lobbying with Hacked Off had made him feel “cynical”, and that going to the government is “probably a bad idea”.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Close Screens Open Minds (@closescreens.openminds)The British screen legend was joined at the event by Peep Show star Sophie Winkleman and psychologist Dr Jonathan Haidt, who has written a book about the rise of mental health issues among young people in the modern world.Hugh has five children – he shares three children with his wife: 12-year-old John Mungo, eight year-old Lulu (whose middle name happens to be Danger, in a nod to the Austin Powers movies) and six-year-old Blue.
