'I Always Hated That': Cynthia Nixon Says This Part Of Sex And The City Has 'Really Not Aged Well'
Cynthia Nixon at the premiere of And Just Like That last weekCynthia Nixon has claimed that she and her colleagues raised issues about Sex And The City’s predominantly white cast during its initial run, to no avail.During a new interview with Grazia, the And Just Like That star reflected on “certain things” about the award-winning series that “have really not aged well”.“It was always very difficult being on a show that was so white,” the Emmy winner explained. “I always hated that.”She continued: “When we would raise it, we were told: this is [Candace Bushnell, the author of the original Sex And The City column and book]’s world and it’s a very white world. I [was] like, ‘OK…’.”Cynthia added that she finds “some of the trans stuff” and “some of the gay stuff” depicted in Sex And The City “a little cringy to look at”.Cynthia Nixon in the early years of Sex And The CityIn 2020, Cynthia told Attitude that while she maintains that Sex And The City is a “well done” and “well-written” show, she “always felt like it was incredibly white and it was incredibly privileged”.“[Those criticisms were] true at the time, too, it’s just that we have a little more awareness now of the disjunct of that,” she explained.A year earlier, she spoke to IndieWire about how she felt the show was inaccurate in its depiction of both race and class. She said: “I think it has a lot of the failings of the feminist movement in it. In that it’s like white, moneyed ladies who are fighting for their empowerment. In a bit of a bubble.”Cynthia also said: “One of the hardest things for me – it was at the time, too – is looking back and seeing how much of it centred around money, right?“And how, Steve, my [character’s] husband, was like the closest we got to a working class guy, you know? Never mind a working class woman, right?”Later this week, Cynthia will return as Miranda Hobbes in the third season of Sex And The City spin-off And Just Like That.Cynthia Nixon on the set of And Just Like That with Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin DavisShe’ll be joined by OGs Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis, as well as And Just Like That returnees Nicole Ari Parker and Sarita Choudhury. However, the team will be down two of its main players, with neither Sara Ramírez nor Karen Pittman back for the new batch of episodes. And Just Like That returns to HBO Max on Thursday 29 May in the US, premiering a day later on both Sky and Now in the UK.READ MORE:11 Joyfully Chaotic Moments In The And Just Like That Season 3 TrailerSarah Jessica Parker Gets Candid About Why She Almost Quit Sex And The City Before It Even AiredAnd Just Like That Star Asked For More Nude Scenes In Season 3 For This Hilarious Reason
