Oh, and FYI – prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. If there’s one thing I do not recommend, it’s falling two metres from a rock climbing wall, snapping your ACL and MCL knee ligaments and shattering its meniscus.Yup – it’s safe to say that last year won’t be going down as one of my best. After smashing my right knee to smithereens, the only option to repair it was to undergo some pretty major surgery, which involved a graft from my hamstring being used as my new MCL, a graft from my patella being turned into a new ACL and a meniscus repair and clean up. The result? A new working knee (well, after a lot of physio), but also, quite frankly, a shit tonne of scars.First things first, there is zero shame in having scars of any kind. Mine look badass as hell and my surgeon did a seriously good job of stitching me up tidily (shout out Iain). They’re a reminder that I went through something massive – and got through it.However, I was keen to bring the redness of my scars down – I’m very pale (see: Scottish) and my MCL scar especially stood out.So when Scar Erase, a British brand that offers silicone scar reduction therapy got in touch, I was excited to see if it would start reducing the darkness of the scar on the inside of my knee.Silicone strips are having a momnet on TikTok right now, and unlikely a lot of the “medical” advice that floats around on the social media app, the use of the strips are actually backed by science and the NHS.As NHS guidance reads: “Silicone may hydrate the scar tissue and reduce the production of collagen fibres. It has also been shown to reduce redness and to make the scar flatter, softer and paler.”The method isn’t new either – silicone sheets and fluid gels, have been used in the treatment of scars for over 30 years.London-based, female-founded company Scar Erase offer soft, lightweight, breathable strips that are worn for a minimum of 12 hours a day over the scarred area.Fuelled by the founders’ – sisters Laura and Sammie – personal journeys with post-surgery scars, Scar Erase was launched to offer a convenient way to treat post surgical, hypertrophic and keloid scars at home.I tested out the strips over my MCL for almost 12 weeks – and now looking at the photos I’m in utter disbelief at how much my scar has faded. The strips themselves were easy to use (simply peel and apply) and completely reusable – you simply reapply the backing strip once your 12 hours are done. They can be cut to size and put anywhere on the body and have serious sticking power – so even if your scar is over a joint, there’s no risk of it peeling off as you move. The strips are easy to wash as well, I’d assumed they lose their stickiness but after using my first strip for a couple of weeks it showed no sign of losing its ability to hold on!They are even suitable for children above six years old to use regularly.A six-week supply of Scar Erase’s Silicone Scar Reduction Therapy, including three reusable strips, costs £28 as a one-off purchase – but the company recommend using the product for at least three months. There’s also the option of subscribing for the lower price of £26.60 per box for 18 weeks worth of treatment. Having seen how well the strips have worked on my MCL scar I’m racing to buy some more for my other scars – a rock climbing membership however, not so much.Related...I Tried My Best To Wreck These Hiking Shoes In Iceland.
