Israel Has Officially Approved Donald Trump's Gaza Peace Plan. What Happens Next?
People react as they celebrate following the announcement that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a peace plan to pause the fighting, at a plaza known as hostages square in Tel Aviv, Israel, Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025. (AP Photo/Emilio Morenatti)Israel has formally approved the first phase of Donald Trump’s peace plan to end the war in Gaza.In a statement posted online on Thursday night, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “The government has just now approved the framework for the release of all of the hostages – the living and the deceased.”Here’s what is expected to happen next.A ceasefire at last?Under the peace deal agreed by both Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, a ceasefire is supposed to begin immediately. However, eyewitnesses told the BBC that Israeli air strikes had continued overnight in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. There were reports of a gunfire near the Netzarim corridor, while witnesses told CNN of shelling in the areas of al-Sabra and Tal al-Hawa.That is despite the peace deal stating that all Israeli military operations must be immediately suspended.Israeli troop withdrawalThe Israeli military has 24 hours to complete its withdrawal from Gaza to “an agreed-upon line”.Once that happens, there is a 72-hour window for the remaining 48 Israeli hostages – 20 of whom are still believed to be alive – to be freed by Hamas.Trump, who is expected to visit the Middle East early next week, has said the hostages should be handed over “on Monday or Tuesday”.“I hope to be there. We’re planning on leaving sometime Sunday,” the president said.Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners currently being held in Israeli jails will also be released as part of the deal. What is still to be agreed?Although an important first hurdle has been cleared, there is still a long way to go before a lasting peace between Israel and Hamas. The biggest sticking point is likely to be Hamas’ demand for a Palestinian state, something the Israeli government is opposed to.Hamas have been clear that they will only fully lay down their arms once it has been established. The militant group also wants to have a future role in Gaza – something Trump’s peace plan clearly prohibits. It is also unclear when or if Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza will take place.Under the Trump plan, Israel will initially still control 53% of the territory, then 40% and then 15%.Further negotiations will take place on how and when Israel’s influence in the region will be further reduced.Related...Starmer Refuses To Say Trump Deserves Nobel Peace Prize For Efforts In GazaIsrael And Hamas Have Agreed To The First Stage Of Trump's Gaza Peace Plan.
