James Cameron Opens Up About The Reason His Wicked Film Never Happened

Oscar winner James Cameron during promotion for Avatar: The Way Of Water in 2022James Cameron has shared that he was once in the running to direct a screen adaptation of the musical Wicked.Speaking on the podcast The Town With Matt Belloni, the filmmaker behind hit movies like Titanic, Avatar, The Terminator and Aliens revealed: “I almost made Wicked back when.“I really love the story, I mean The Wizard Of Oz is one of my favourite [films]. This is going back 15 years…”However, he ultimately made the decision to step away from the project as, in his words, he “couldn’t find the song”.Cameron hasn’t ruled out one day overseeing a big-screen musical, though, reiterating that he still considers The Wizard Of Oz to be his favourite film.Wicked’s journey to the big screen was a long and arduous one, with director Jon M Chu eventually helming the hugely successful adaptation, which he made the decision to split into two separate films, the second of which is in cinemas now.Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba in Wicked For GoodThe first Wicked movie featured Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as the central Oz witches Elphaba and Glinda, scooping 10 Oscar nominations and winning two for its elaborate production design and costumes.Meanwhile, Cameron is gearing up for the release of the third Avatar movie, subtitled Fire And Ash, three years after the previous instalment The Way Of Water first hit cinemas.The Way Of Water and Fire And Ash were filmed simultaneously between 2017 and 2018, with fourth and fifth instalments in the Avatar series also planned.Fans of the epic movie saga will have to wait a little while longer for those, though, as they’re currently slated for release in 2029 and 2031.Like the first two Avatar films, Fire And Ash will feature appearances from Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, with Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin and Jack Champion also reprising roles introduced in the second instalment.Avatar: Fire And Ash is due to hit cinemas on Friday 19 December.MORE WICKED NEWS:People Have A Lot Of Feelings About Elphaba's 'Sex Cardigan' In Wicked For GoodWicked For Good Director Shares Story Behind Film's Emotional Final MomentsWicked Writer Discusses 'Too Romantic' Deleted Scene That Would Have Changed The Film
