James Cameron Shares His Honest Take On Why Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer Was A 'Moral Cop-Out'
Cillian Murphy on the set of Oppenheimer, for which he won his first OscarChristopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer may have won a slew of Oscars and become one of the biggest box office hits of the year it was released, but seemingly not everyone is a fan.And that would include the always-opinionated filmmaker James Cameron.Cameron – the director of hit movies like Alien, Titanic and Avatar – is currently eyeing a film adaptation of the book Ghosts Of Hiroshima, set in World War II-era Japan.Asked about Oppenheimer (a film which explores the making of the bomb that was later used in Hiroshima during World War II) during a new interview with Deadline, Cameron said that while he admired Nolan’s “filmmaking” in Oppenheimer, he felt the omission of certain details was “a bit of a moral cop out”.James Cameron“It’s not like Oppenheimer didn’t know the effects,” the Oscar winner said. “[Nolan’s film has] one brief scene [in which] we see – and I don’t like to criticise another filmmaker’s film – but there’s only one brief moment where he sees some charred bodies in the audience and then the film goes on to show how it deeply moved him.“But I felt that it dodged the subject. I don’t know whether the studio or Chris felt that that was a third rail that they didn’t want to touch, but I want to go straight at the third rail. I’m just stupid that way.”Shortly after his film’s release, Nolan addressed critics who felt he should have included more about the bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima .Christopher Nolan behind the scenes of Oppenheimer with Cillian MurphyHe reasoned during an interview with Variety: “The film presents Oppenheimer’s experience subjectively. It was always my intention to rigidly stick to that. Oppenheimer heard about the bombing at the same time that the rest of the world did.“I wanted to show somebody who is starting to gain a clearer picture of the unintended consequences of his actions. It was as much about what I don’t show as what I show.”The Inception director added that he hoped Oppenheimer would spark discussion, rather than presenting definitive answers.Cameron’s next film will be the third instalment in the Avatar series, subtitled Fire And Ash.Meanwhile, Nolan is currently working on a star-studded epic adaptation of The Odyssey, featuring everyone from Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o to former collaborators like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Elliot Page.MORE FILM NEWS:Reviews For Jurassic World Rebirth Are Mixed – But There's 1 Thing Critics Do Agree On28 Years Later 'Alpha' Chi Lewis-Parry Reacts To 1 Big Part Of The Film That's Got Everyone TalkingMeryl Streep And Anne Hathaway Land Exciting New Oscar-Winning Co-Star In Devil Wears Prada 2
