James Cleverly Is Returning To The Tory Frontbench. That Spells Trouble For Kemi Badenoch
James Cleverly at last year's Tory conference in Birmingham.Despite her spokesman bizarrely claiming in January that there would be no Tory reshuffle before the next election, Kemi Badenoch is carrying out a shake-up of her top team. The Conservative leader has been partly forced into it by shadow health secretary Edward Argar’s decision to stand down for health reasons. But after a less-than-stellar first eight months in the job, it gives Badenoch the chance to carry out a much-needed a refresh of the Tory frontbench.Details of how big a reshuffle it is going to be remain sketchy, but we do know that it will see the return to frontline politics of James Cleverly. It is not known what job Cleverly will get, but it is surely inconceivable that he will not be handed a significant role befitting his status. One of the few genuine Tory big beasts still in the Commons after last year’s general election wipeout, the former foreign secretary and home secretary will bring some political heft to the Conservative operation. However, his appointment does not come without risks for Badenoch, not least because Cleverly has not been idle since his Conservative leadership ended in failure and embarrassment last year.Amid persistent rumours that he still has eyes on the top job, the former cabinet minister has been setting out his views on Net Zero and Britain’s membership of the European Convention on Human Rights – and they are certainly not the same as Badenoch’s.In a speech last month, Cleverly criticised the “neo-Luddites” on the right of politics who are suspicious of using green technologies to protect the environment.“The idea that we must choose between a strong economy and protecting our environment is outdated,” he said. “The future I believe in is one where these two aims go hand in hand, driving innovation and opportunity. That’s the future I want for the United Kingdom, and for the world.”His comments appeared to put him at odds, with Badenoch, who in March said that achieving Net Zero by 2050 – a policy pioneered by Theresa May – is “impossible”.And just a week ago, Cleverly warned that quitting the ECHR was not a “silver bullet” that will automatically lead to the UK being able to deport more foreign criminals. He said: “The bottom line is other signatories to the ECHR are kicking out foreign criminals much more than we are, and other countries that are not signatories to the ECHR are also struggling.”Badenoch, however, has launched a review into Britain’s membership of the body, claiming that she is “increasingly of the view” that leaving it is necessary. The Tory leader may well believe that it is better to have Cleverly inside the Tory tent spitting out rather than outside it spitting in.But having someone so clearly at odds with her on such fundamental policies is a recipe for trouble that the under-pressure Badenoch could well live without.Related...Kemi Badenoch Brands Nigel Farage 'A Bulls*****r' In Foul-Mouthed RantTory MP Takes Swipe At Kemi Badenoch For Attacking Starmer Over PMQs Absence'Unserious And Irrelevant': Starmer Blasts Badenoch After She Accuses Him Of Dodging PMQs
