Just 1 Move From Trump Could Force Putin To 'Sober Up', Ukraine's President Claims
President Donald Trump, right, shakes the hand of Russia's President Vladimir Putin during a joint press conference at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Friday, Aug. 15, 2025. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Donald Trump could help Vladimir Putin “sober up” and negotiate a ceasefire just by delivering long-requested Tomahawk cruise missiles.Ukraine has been pleading for the US’s permission to use these weapons for months, even though former president Joe Biden rejected Kyiv’s appeal for the long-range missiles when he was in office. The subsonic missiles, designed for precision strikes, would allow Ukraine to reach targets as far as Siberia with a range of up to 1,550 miles. But the Ukrainian president expressed renewed hope to journalists this week, claiming Trump might “give Ukraine some far-reaching things” which would strengthen Ukraine’s position in future peace talks.Speaking on Thursday, Zelenskyy said: “Right now, it is important to send a signal that Ukraine will be strengthened by all means possible. And this is one of those means that is important to me – Tomahawks.“All such things can strengthen Ukraine and force the Russians to sober up a little, sit down at the negotiating table.”Zelenskyy said he first raised the issue with Trump a year ago, before the president had even won his second term in office. The Ukrainian president suggested his American counterpart was now considering it, 12 months later.During their last meeting at the UN General Assembly, Trump reportedly “promised to work on a technical level and consider such a possibility.”On October 6, Trump said he had “sort of made a decision” on what to do with the Tomahawk missiles – but wants to “find out what they’re doing with them”.Zelenskyy also tried to encourage Trump to take further actions against Russia by telling reporters Ukraine would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he helps to secure a ceasefire with Putin. The US president has made it very clear he wants to be nominated for the prestigous award, even alleging he has settled “seven wars” since returning to office – although that claim is up for dispute.Trump has tried to broker peace in the Ukraine war even since he was re-elected in January, even offering to end the conflict on terms favourable to Putin. However, the Russian tyrant continued to drag his feet and refused to come to the negotiating table – so Trump has gradually lost his patience, and is finally re-aligning the US with Ukraine.Putin has warned that delivering Tomahawks would be seen as an escalation in the war, and could threaten US relations seeing as they can only be used with American permission. The Ukrainian president also told reporters that if Moscow resorts to the tactic it has used repeatedly over the three-and-a-half year war – imposing blackouts by targeting Ukrainian infrastructure – then they would retaliate.Kyiv has recently expanded its capabilities meaning to can now strike at Russian energy infrastructure. On October 5, Ukraine damaged energy facilities in the Russian city of Belgorod, meaning almost 40,000 residents were left without electricity.Zelenskyy said: “We told them they must understand: if they want to blackout us, we will do the same. [Russia] must feel the price of this war. But we are not killing civilians.”Related...Trump And Russia Finally Admit What The Rest Of The West Already SuspectedPutin Quietly Looking To Change Conscription Rules To Boost Depleted Russian Army, UK SaysPutin Hits Back At Trump's New Criticisms Of Russia With A Classic Playground Insult
