'Just F**k Off': Emma Thompson Shares Her Very Sweary Take On The Rise Of AI In Hollywood
Dame Emma ThompsonDame Emma Thompson wants to make her feelings on the rise of AI use in the film industry abundantly clear. The two-time Oscar winner recently paid a visit to Stephen Colbert’s US talk show, where the host asked the Love Actually star how she felt about what he described as the “coming AI revolution” in Hollywood.“Intense irritation. I cannot begin to tell you,” Dame Emma responded, taking particular issue with artificial intelligence trying to offer her tips on her writing (as well as her prolific acting career, Dame Emma is also a celebrated screenwriter, penning the likes of Nanny McPhee, Bridget Jones’s Baby and Sense & Sensibility, for which she won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay). She explained: “I write longhand on a pad, because I believe that there is a connection between the brain and the hand. So it’s very important to me.“And then when I’ve written something, I will put it into a Word document. And recently, the Word document is constantly saying, ‘Would you like me to rewrite that for you?’.“So, I end up just saying, ‘I don’t need you to rewrite what I’ve just written, will you fuck off?! Just fuck off!’. I’m so annoyed!”The increased use of AI in the film industry is becoming a contentious issue, with 2023’s strikes across Hollywood being partly inspired by concerns surrounding movie and TV studios’ usage of artificial intelligence to scan performers’ likenesses and recreate them in future projects.Dame Emma isn’t the only Academy Award winner to speak out against the use of artificial intelligence in the last week, either.Filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro recently shared his take during an interview with NPR, claiming: “The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’. And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I’d rather die’.”READ MORE:Oscar Winner Guillermo Del Toro Has 3 Very Blunt Words When Asked For His Feelings About AI In CinemaRobin Williams' Daughter Pleads With Her Dad's Fans To Stop Using His Image In 'Gross' AI VideosChannel 4 Defends Use Of AI-Generated Presenter As Part Of Dispatches Stunt
