Katy Perry Opens Up About Feeling Like A 'Human Piñata' Because Of Online Hate

Katy Perry on stage in Mexico last weekKaty Perry has admitted that comments about her on social media can leave her feeling like a “human piñata”.It’s fair to say that Katy has taken a few knocks in the last 12 months, which really began last year when she unveiled the lead single from her latest album 143, and it was revealed she’d chosen to reunite with the controversial producer Dr Luke. While Katy previously worked with Dr Luke on hits like California Gurls, Hot N Cold, and Roar, the two hadn’t collaborated in a decade, since he was accused of sexual and emotional abuse by his former protégé Kesha.Dr Luke always denied the allegations made against him, and the pair eventually settled out of court in the summer of 2023.Katy’s decision to work with Dr Luke – particularly on a quasi-feminist anthem like her 2024 release Woman’s World – was widely criticised, and the song itself stalled outside the top 40 on both sides of the Atlantic.Follow-up album 143 was also met with a lukewarm response from critics, as was her brief trip into space earlier this month.Last week, Katy kicked off her Lifetimes tour in support of 143, with fans surprising her by paying for a billboard in Times Square to celebrate the shows.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Katy Perry Brasil (@katyperrybrasil)The Grammy nominee responded in an Instagram comment: “I’m so grateful for you guys. We’re in this beautiful and wild journey together.“I can continue to remain true to myself, heart open and honest especially because of our bond. I love you guys and have grown up together with you and am so excited to see you all over the world this year!”Katy continued: “Please know I am OK, I have done a lot work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me. My therapist said something years ago that has been a game changer, ‘no one can make you believe something about yourself that you don’t already believe about yourself’ and if I ever do have any feelings about it then it’s an opportunity to investigate the feeling underneath it.“When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, because I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.”She added: “What’s real is seeing your faces every night, singing in unison, reading your notes, feeling your warmth. I find people to lock eyes and sing with and I know we are healing each other in a small way when I get to do that.“l’m not perfect, and I actually have omitted that word from my vocabulary, I’m on a human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many and sometimes I fall but... I get back up and go on and continue to play the game and somehow through my battered and bruised adventure I keep looking to the light and in that light a new level unlocks.”Katy Perry reacts to fans setting up a Times Square billboard sending her love:“When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping… pic.twitter.com/pR915YsR5J— Pop Crave (@PopCrave) April 29, 2025Katy’s tour has also been the subject of some online scrutiny, with one video of her dancing racking up half a million views on TikTok.There’s also been some debate over whether certain sections of the tour use AI for its video backdrops.HuffPost UK contacted Katy Perry’s team on Monday for clarification but did not receive a response.READ MORE:Lily Allen Apologises To Katy Perry For 'Mean' Comments About Her Divisive Space VoyageHere's Why People Think Kesha Was Throwing Shade At Katy Perry With This SelfiePeople Are Saying The Same Thing As Katy Perry Returns From Her Trip To Space
