Keir Starmer Believes No One In No.10 Briefed Against Wes Streeting – Despite Apologising For The Briefings Against Him
Keir Starmer and Wes Streeting on a hospital visit last year.Keir Starmer believes no one in No.10 briefed against Wes Streeting – even though he apologised to the health secretary for the briefings against him.The prime minister spoke to his senior team on Thursday morning amid the ongoing row which has sparked a fresh Labour civil war.Sources close to Starmer accused Streeting of plotting against him and even suggested he could challenge for the Labour leadership after the Budget later this month. The health secretary said that was untrue – and accused the PM’s supporters of trying to “kneecap” him.Streeting also hit out at the “toxic culture” inside Downing Street.Starmer apologised to Streeting for the briefings against him in a short telephone call on Wednesday night.Labour chair Anna Turley told ITV that the prime minister would “investigate” to find out who was behind the briefings. But in a briefing to journalists on Thursday, the PM’s spokesman said that was already over and No.10 staff had been cleared of any involvement. He said: “The prime minister spoke to his senior team this morning and reiterated he would never sanction any such briefings against colleagues. “He has been assured that no No.10 staff briefed against ministers and has made abundantly clear the high standards he expects from staff and if anyone falls below those standards there would be consequences.”Referring to the journalists who initially broke the story about the briefings against Streeting, a government source said: “Pippa Crerar, Chris Mason, and Alex Wickham must have all been tricked by several imposters posing as No.10 staff.”HuffPost UK revealed that briefings against Streeting are still going on with Downing Street chief of staff Morgan McSweeney accused of being behind it.A government source said: “While Keir was apologising, No10 and ‘friends of Morgan’ were still briefing against Wes. Keir’s got to get his house in order.”A cabinet minister said: “This whole thing is not good for Morgan or Keir, but it has left Wes much stronger.”Another minister played down suggestions that McSweeney could end up leaving No.10 over the controversy. He said: “The PM and him are inextricably linked. I can’t see PM breaking that link.”Related...Exclusive: No.10 'Still Briefing Against Streeting' Despite Starmer ApologyWes Streeting Says Keir Starmer's Allies Are Trying To 'Kneecap' HimCabinet Splits Erupt As Keir Starmer Allies Accuse Wes Streeting Of Plotting Against Him
