Keir Starmer Blasts Nigel Farage's 'Racist' Plan To Deport Migrants Who Have Lived In UK For Years
Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage.Nigel Farage’s threat to deport immigrants who have lived legally in the UK for many years is “racist and immoral”, Keir Starmer has declared. In outspoken comments, the prime minister claimed that Reform UK’s policy would “rip this country apart”.He also said Farage would “cosy up” to Vladimir Putin if he ever became PM.Farage announced last week that he would scrap so-called “indefinite leave to remain” status given to millions of immigrants who have entered the UK illegally. If they failed to meet strict new criteria on employment and earnings, they could be deported, regardless of how long they have lived in Britain.Migration experts told HuffPost UK this could see people who have lived in the UK for decades being forcible removed from the country. On Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg on BBC1, Starmer was asked if it was a racist policy. He replied: “Well, I do think that it is a racist policy. I do think it is immoral. It needs to be called out for what it is.”Asked if Reform are trying to appeal to racists, the PM said: “No, I think there are plenty of people who either vote Reform or are thinking of voting Reform who are frustrated.“They had 14 years of failure under the Conservatives, they want us to change things.“They may have voted Labour a year ago, and they want the change to come more quickly. I actually do understand that.”He had earlier said: “It is one thing to say we’re going to remove illegal migrants, people who have no right to be here. I’m up for that.“It is a completely different thing to say we are going to reach in to people who are lawfully here and start removing them. They are our neighbours. They’re people who work in our economy. They are part of who we are. It will rip this country apart.”On Farage’s attitude towards Russia, Starmer said: “We are, at the moment, a leading member of the coalition of the willing, corralling and bringing together European countries to fight the aggression of [Vladimir] Putin.“Imagine if Reform came in and they were cosying up to Putin – the impact that would have on our security and defence.”Related...Nigel Farage On Course To Be Prime Minister As Labour And Tories Collapse, New Mega-Poll ShowsPeople Who Have Lived In The UK For Decades Could Be Deported If Farage Becomes PMFarage's Big Immigration Crackdown Is Already 'Falling Apart'.
