(Toby Melville, Pool Photo via AP)Keir Starmer has said the UK “will never surrender” the Union Flag after police were assaulted at a far-right rally. The prime minister said he would allow it to be used “as a symbol of violence, fear and division” and said the event had led to people being “intimidated on our streets because of their background or the colour of their skin”.More than 100,000 people took part in Saturday’s march in central London, which was organised by right-wing agitator Tommy Robinson. The Metropolitan Police said 26 of their officers were injured, including four seriously, after allegedly being attacked by some of those taking part. They said: “There is no doubt that many came to exercise their lawful right to protest, but there were many who came intent on violence.“They confronted officers, engaged in physical and verbal abuse and making a determined effort to breach cordons in place to keep everyone safe.”In a post on X on Sunday afternoon, Starmer said: “People have a right to peaceful protest. It is core to our country’s values. But we will not stand for assaults on police officers doing their job or for people feeling intimidated on our streets because of their background or the colour of their skin.“Britain is a nation proudly built on tolerance, diversity and respect. Our flag represents our diverse country and we will never surrender it to those that use it as a symbol of violence, fear and division.”His comments echoed those of Winston Churchill in the Commons in 1940 as he vowed to UK would stand up to Nazi Germany. He said: “We shall go on to the end... we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”Saturday’s rally was also addressed via videolink by Elon Musk, who said “violence is coming” to the UK as he called on the government to be removed. He said: “I really think that there’s got to be a change of government in Britain. You can’t – we don’t have another four years, or whenever the next election is, it’s too long.“Something’s got to be done. There’s got to be a dissolution of parliament and a new vote held.”He told the crowd that they will have to “fight back or die” if they want to defend their country.“Violence is going to come to you,” he said. “You will have no choice. You are in a fundamental situation here where, whether you choose violence or not, violence is coming to you. You either fight back or you die. That’s the truth.”Related...Elon Musk Slammed After Telling Far-Right Rally 'Violence Is Coming' To UKHow Civil War Gripped The Labour Party And Left MPs Asking: 'How Long Can Starmer Survive?'Keir Starmer Has 'Confidence In His Top Team' Despite Government's Woes
