Keir Starmer Suspends 4 Labour MPs In Crackdown On Party Discipline
Keir Starmer Keir Starmer has suspended four Labour MPs for persistent breaches of party discipline, it has emerged. The prime minister decided to lay down the law after dozens of his own backbenchers rebelled against the government’s welfare cuts.Neil Duncan-Jordan, Brian Leishman, Chris Hinchliff and Rachael Maskell have all had the Labour whip withdrawn.Meanwhile, fellow Labour MPs Rosena Allin Khan, Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Mohammed Yasin have had their trade envoy roles removed. It is understood the action is being targeted against Labour MPs judged to have been “actively organising against the government”, and not based solely on their voting record. The dramatic move came after the final prime minister’s questions before MPs leave Westminster for the summer recess.A Labour source told The Times they had been suspended for “persistent knobheadery”.Duncan-Jordan, the MP for Poole, told the Mirror: “Since being elected I have consistently spoken up for my constituents on a range of issues, including most recently on cuts to disability benefits.“I understood this could come at a cost, but I couldn’t support making disabled people poorer.”The Commons last week passed the government’s Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments Bill, but 47 Labour MPs voted against the government and a further 14 abstained. That was despite Starmer offering a number of major concessions which effectively killed off the government’s plan to save £5 billion from the welfare bill by making it harder to claim PIP.It is the second time the prime minister has imposed a mass suspension on a number of Labour MPs.Nearly a year ago, seven lost the whip after voting against the government to call for the scrapping of the two-child benefit cap.Four of them later had the whip restored, but one who did not, Zarah Sultana, earlier this month announced that she is setting up her own left-wing party for former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
