Keir Starmer's Latest Immigration Plan Is Reminding People Of 1 Failed Tory Policy

Keir Starmer made the announcement on a visit to Albania.Keir Starmer has been accused of coming up with a “knock off version” of the Tories’ disastrous Rwanda scheme after he unveiled plans to deport asylum seekers abroad. The prime minister said the government wants to set up “return hubs” where immigrants who have failed to win the right to live in the UK can be sent.He unveiled the plan during a visit to Albania, which has entered into a similar agreement with Italy.Starmer said: “Now what we want to do, and are having discussions and talks of, is return hubs. These would be used when someone has been through the system in the UK and needs to be returned.”He said it would “allow us to bear down on this vile trade and help stop people from crossing the Channel” in small boats. But critics instantly pointed out that the idea bore all the hallmarks of the Rwanda plan, which Starmer scrapped as soon as he became PM last July.Under the Tory scheme, which was announced in 2022, anyone arriving in the UK illegally would have been sent to the east African country.Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer said: “Mere months after rightly denouncing the last government’s failed Rwanda scheme as a gimmick and a waste of taxpayer money, Starmer is now looking for his own knock off version. “Instead of wasting more taxpayer money trying to look tough, it’s time Starmer got a grip of the real driving force behind smuggling gangs: the fact that for most people who might need and be eligible to seek asylum in the UK, there is simply no safe and managed way to do so.” Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, also condemned Starmer’s plan.He said: “Threatening to detain people in countries they’ve never set foot in causes fear and panic leading to low rates of compliance, compared with orderly and humane returns systems that achieve far higher levels of compliance and are far less costly for the taxpayer.“We need a competent asylum system that doesn’t waste taxpayers’ money, and treats every human being with dignity.”Embarrassingly for Starmer, his Albanian counterpart, Edi Rama, ruled out his own country agreeing to take failed asylum seekers from the UK.“We have been asked by several countries if we were open to it, and we said no, because we are loyal to the marriage with Italy and the rest is just love,” he told reporters at a press conference as Starmer stood beside him.Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: “This trip is an embarrassment. Starmer jetted off and now the Albanian prime minister has made clear that there will be no UK return hubs in Albania. So, what was the point of this entire visit?“Under the Conservatives, we already struck a real returns deal and a law enforcement deal with Albania – and they worked. Small boat arrivals from Albania dropped by over 90%.”Related...Victoria Derbyshire Skewers Minister As She Dodges 6 Questions On Labour Immigration PledgeAnalysis: Keir Starmer's Credibility Problem On Immigration Means He Can't Out-Farage FarageHow Does Keir Starmer Plan On Cutting Immigration?
